Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, CHEVY SPARK LS (Part #FDRWBX1722) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The BX1722 is a tow baseplate manufactured by Blue Ox designed specifically for 2013-2015 Chevy Spark vehicles. It is used to attach a tow bar to the front of the vehicle for towing purposes. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR; exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Yes, the BX1722 is designed for 2013-2015 Chevy Spark vehicles. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox technical service at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation.

The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle but is not listed in the included parts. You will need to drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions during installation. Contact your Blue Ox dealer to confirm whether this kit is included or must be purchased separately.
Blue Ox recommends that baseplates be installed by Blue Ox dealers who are familiar with their products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do "fit work". Blue Ox dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting their Technical Service Department at (402) 385-3051. However, the manual does not explicitly state that professional installation is required.
Place all components that are removed on a flat, sturdy surface. All items will be reinstalled unless otherwise noted after the baseplate is installed. Be aware that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances. Have protective covers and rags available to prevent damage to cosmetic parts during handling.
Remove the six push pins from along the top edge of the fascia (three on each side). This is the first step in removing the front fascia to access the mounting points for the baseplate.
1. Remove six push pins from the top edge of the fascia (three on each side). 2. Remove two push pins from each wheel well, pull back the wheel well cover, and using a T20 Torx, remove the screw at the top of the fascia on both sides. 3. Using a Phillips screwdriver or 7MM socket, remove eight screws from the bottom edge of the fascia (four on each side). 4. Pull the corners of the fascia away from the vehicle, disconnect any electrical connections, and set the fascia aside.
Remove the four push pins from the driver side air baffle (white) and set it aside. Then remove the three push pins (gray) and the temperature sensor (black) from the passenger side air baffle and remove the baffle from the vehicle. The temperature sensor will be reinstalled later.
Using a 12MM socket, remove the two bolts from the inside edge of the bumper on both sides. Bend the passenger side bumper tab back slightly for baseplate clearance. On the driver side tab, cut it off flush with the top of the bumper for baseplate bolt installation.
Install the driver side end plate onto the frame with 8MM-1.25 x 35MM bolts and 8MM lock washers. Use two 1/4" flat washers per bolt as a spacer between the frame and the end plate. Do not fully tighten the bolts until the baseplate is installed. Repeat this process on the passenger side.
Install the baseplate onto both end plates using 3/8" hardware (3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" hex head bolts, 3/8" flat washers, and 3/8"-16 hex nylon insert lock nuts). Fully tighten down the baseplate and end plate bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads and tighten all bolts to the appropriate torque according to the torque chart provided in the manual.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a hole through the bumper 13-1/2" in from the end on both sides of the vehicle using a 3/8" drill bit. When drilling through the bumper, do not hit the radiator behind. Use a piece of pipe on the bit or a stubby drill bit to prevent drilling too deep. After drilling, install 3/8" hardware and fully tighten using Loctite Red on all bolt threads.
Yes, trimming is required. The passenger side bumper tab must be bent back slightly for baseplate clearance, and the driver side bumper tab must be cut off flush with the top of the bumper. Additionally, the passenger side baffle must be trimmed around the baseplate before reinstallation. The fascia must also be trimmed around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstallation.
The following modifications are permanent: cutting off the driver side bumper tab flush with the top of the bumper, drilling holes through the bumper for baseplate attachment, and trimming the passenger side air baffle around the baseplate. The passenger side bumper tab is bent (not cut) and can potentially be straightened. The fascia is trimmed but can be replaced if damaged.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart in the manual, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. The BX1722 uses 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" Grade 5 hex head bolts for attaching the baseplate to the end plates and for bumper attachment. Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart in the manual, 8MM Grade 8.8 bolts should be torqued to 16 foot-pounds. The BX1722 uses 8MM-1.25 x 35MM Grade 8.8 bolts for attaching the end plates to the frame. Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart in the manual, 1/4" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 10 foot-pounds. The BX1722 uses 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Grade 5 hex head bolts for optional breakaway installation. Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
The attachment tab height is 22-1/2" and the attachment tab width is 18".
The optional breakaway bracket should be installed to the bumper approximately 16" from the end on the driver side, or in the desired location. Install the bracket with 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex head bolts, then install the breakaway to the bracket with the same 1/4" hardware.
Using a 3/8" drill bit, drill a hole through the bumper 13-1/2" in from the end. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle. When drilling, do not hit the radiator behind; use a piece of pipe on the bit or a stubby drill bit to prevent drilling too deep.
Failure to read and follow these instructions could result in separation of the towed vehicle from the tow bar, causing property damage, loss of towed vehicle, personal injury or death. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR; exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again, as an accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The principle function of the permanent baseplate safety cables is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose in the event the connection between the frame of the towed vehicle and the baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle and are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The manual shows the recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines.
When drilling through the bumper, do not hit the radiator behind. Use a piece of pipe on the bit or a stubby drill bit to prevent drilling too deep. Be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length when using power drills. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. This is important for protecting the exposed metal from corrosion.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. This ensures that the vehicle's electrical systems are working correctly after the fascia removal and reinstallation.
Hold the fascia as close to its original position, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs, then reinstall the fascia. This completes the installation process.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use (if applicable). Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
Yes, the attachment tabs should be removed when not in use (if applicable). This helps protect the tabs and the vehicle's appearance when the baseplate is not actively being used for towing.

Yes, the BX1722 is designed for 2013-2015 Chevy Spark vehicles. If your vehicle's front looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before installing.
You'll need: torque wrench, drill with 1/2" and 3/8" bits, reciprocating saw, T20 Torx, 7MM/12MM/13MM/9/16" sockets, Phillips and flat screwdrivers, utility knife, large vise grip, 9/16" wrench, and Loctite Red. A piece of pipe or stubby drill bit is recommended when drilling the bumper.
Use 33 foot-pounds for 3/8" Grade 5 bolts, 16 foot-pounds for 8MM Grade 8.8 bolts, and 10 foot-pounds for 1/4" Grade 5 bolts. Always apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening. Refer to the torque chart in the manual for other bolt sizes.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the baseplate connection fails. The cables must connect from the baseplate to the vehicle's frame rail or cross member and must not rub against hoses or moving parts.
Exceeding your vehicle's GVWR will void the manufacturer's warranty. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR, so you must not tow loads that cause the vehicle to exceed this weight limit.
Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended torque specifications using Loctite Red. Check that safety cables are secure and not rubbing against hoses or moving parts.
Yes, remove the attachment tabs when not in use. This protects them and maintains the vehicle's appearance when the baseplate is not actively being used for towing.
The manual warns against hitting the radiator when drilling through the bumper. To prevent this, use a piece of pipe on the drill bit or a stubby drill bit to limit drilling depth. If you have already hit the radiator, stop immediately and inspect for damage. Contact a qualified mechanic or Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for guidance on radiator inspection and repair before proceeding with installation.
Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. If the baseplate was damaged in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused, as an accident can cause unseen damage that could result in more damage or serious injury. Contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 or your Blue Ox dealer to order replacement parts or a replacement baseplate.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. If electrical connections are not working after reinstallation, remove the fascia again and check that all connectors are fully seated and properly connected. Verify that no wires were pinched or damaged during fascia removal and reinstallation. If problems persist, contact Blue Ox technical service at (402) 385-3051.
Always use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening. Tighten all bolts to the appropriate torque according to the torque chart provided in the manual. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for loose bolts and retighten as needed. If bolts continue to loosen despite using Loctite Red and proper torque, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for technical support.
