Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX1720 attachment tab height is 14-1/2" and the width is 28".
Required tools include: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, hammer, torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 3/8" drill bit, 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 9/16" socket, and T20 Torx. You will also need Loctite Red for all bolt threads.
Yes, the fascia must be removed and reinstalled during baseplate installation. The fascia removal involves removing push pins, screws from the top corners, wheel well screws, fender screws, and underside screws, then disconnecting all electrical connections. All items are reinstalled after baseplate installation is complete.
Yes, the horn brackets must be removed before baseplate installation. Using a 10MM socket, remove the screw from the horn bracket on both sides of the vehicle and set the horns aside. The brackets are reinstalled after baseplate installation, though they may need to be bent slightly for clearance.
Yes, drilling is required. Using a 3/8" drill bit, you must drill the top back hole through the frame on both sides of the vehicle, then continue drilling the remaining holes through the frame. The manual notes that some drilling and trimming is required as part of the installation process.
Yes, trimming is required. You must trim the plastic shrouding on the underside of the bumper on both sides of the vehicle for baseplate installation clearance. Additionally, you will need to mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstalling it.
Yes, using a hammer, you must dimple in the front side of the frame protrusion on both sides of the vehicle for baseplate installation clearance.
The torque specification for 3/8"-16 Grade 5 bolts is 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided in the manual, and Loctite Red must be used on all bolt threads before tightening.
The torque specification for 1/4"-20 Grade 5 bolts is 10 foot-pounds. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided in the manual, and Loctite Red must be used on all bolt threads before tightening.
Position the baseplate onto the frame, pulling it tight against the backside of the bumper. Position the bottom of the cross tube approximately 2-3/8" down from the underside of the bumper. Clamp the baseplate to the frame before drilling and bolting.
The baseplate is attached using 3/8"-16 bolts with lock washers and nut plates. Specifically: 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" bolts are used for the top holes, and 3/8"-16 x 2" bolts are used for the bottom holes with spacer tubes (3/4" x 1") between the frame and baseplate. All hardware must be tightened with Loctite Red applied to the bolt threads.
Yes, spacer tubes (3/4" x 1") are required. Two spacer tubes are included in the hardware kit and must be installed between the frame and baseplate at the bottom hole on each side of the vehicle when installing the 3/8"-16 x 2" bolts.
Nut plates are installed on the inside of the frame to secure the bolts. The manual specifies using 3/8"-16 nut plates with 14" wire (four included in the hardware kit). These are fastened to the inside of the frame to hold the bolts in place.
Yes, after installing and tightening the top back bolts on both sides of the vehicle, level the baseplate before fully tightening all remaining hardware.
The attachment tabs are part of the baseplate assembly (two included, part number 62-3468). They are positioned on the baseplate and the fascia must be marked and trimmed around them before reinstalling. The manual notes that the fascia should be held as close to its original position when marking and trimming around the attachment tabs.
Yes, permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and are included in the hardware kit (two Class III Safety Cables, part number 226-0046). These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame on both sides. The cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. Safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The manual provides recommended installation arrangements and notes that additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in such cases, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
If the baseplate is involved in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
The BX1720 baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. This is critical to verify that the electrical system is working correctly before the fascia is reinstalled.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Additionally, register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
Yes, use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. This is an important maintenance step to protect the frame from corrosion.
The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle but the manual does not specify whether it is included. Contact your Blue Ox Dealer or Blue Ox technical service at (402) 385-3051 to confirm what is included with your baseplate kit.
Blue Ox recommends that towing products be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with their products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do "fit work". Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting technical service at (402) 385-3051. However, the manual does not state that professional installation is mandatory.
The manual states that many Blue Ox baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware to mount the baseplate to the towed vehicle. However, even though bolts are there, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5).
If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use the correct replacement bolt will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty to the original (first) retail purchaser. The product is warranted to be free from defect in material and workmanship under normal use and service for three years from the date of delivery. Warranty coverage is valid only if the customer warranty card is returned within 30 days of purchase and a copy of the original invoice accompanies any claim. The warranty is non-transferable and does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification, neglect, failure to properly service and maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint, or rust.
