Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2801 is a towing baseplate manufactured by Blue Ox for the 2012–2017 Fiat 500 Pop/Lounge and 2012–2017 Fiat 500c Pop/Lounge. It is designed to provide a secure attachment point for towing equipment. The baseplate has an attachment tab height of 13-1/2" and width of 18".
The BX2801 is designed for 2012–2017 Fiat 500 Pop/Lounge and 2012–2017 Fiat 500c Pop/Lounge models only. If your vehicle looks different from the reference image in the manual, contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding.
Blue Ox recommends that the BX2801 be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the product and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051.
Required tools include: large vise grip, hammer, reciprocating saw, utility knife, Phillips screwdriver, torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 13/32" drill bit, 8MM socket, 10MM socket, 14MM socket, 9/16" socket, and T30 Torx. You will also need Loctite Red for all bolt threads.
The fascia is removed and reinstalled. The air deflector and bumper horns are removed and not reinstalled. All other removed components are reinstalled after baseplate installation. Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface during work.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. Installation instructions for the kit are provided on page 7 of the manual.
Yes. Drilling and trimming are required. Specifically, you must drill two side holes using a 13/32" drill bit with the baseplate as a template (step 9). Additionally, the fascia must be trimmed around the convenience links and attachment tabs (step 11).
A 13/32" drill bit is used to drill the two side holes. The baseplate is used as a template for hole placement.
The manual provides a general torque chart for metric and inch bolts. For metric bolts: 6MM Grade 8.8 = 6 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 8 ft-lbs; 8MM Grade 8.8 = 16 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 22 ft-lbs; 10MM Grade 8.8 = 31 ft-lbs, Grade 10.9 = 40 ft-lbs; 3/8" Grade 5 = 33 ft-lbs, Grade 8 = 47 ft-lbs. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite Red applied to threads.
Eight existing 10MM bolts are reused to secure the baseplate to the vehicle. These bolts are aligned with four holes on each side of the vehicle (step 8). Loctite Red must be applied to all bolt threads before tightening to the appropriate torque.
In the two side holes drilled with a 13/32" bit, install 3/8"-16 x 1" hex head bolts (Grade 5), 3/8" lock washers, and 3/8"-16 nuts with wires. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads and tighten to the appropriate torque specification.
The permanent baseplate safety cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. They must not rub against hoses or moving parts. Safety cables are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the vehicle frame. The manual shows recommended installation locations. Ensure the cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install on both sides of the vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and cannot be reused. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using a damaged baseplate could result in more damage or serious injury.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Reference your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure Loctite Red is used on all bolts and they are tightened to recommended specifications.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to recommended specifications. Paint any cut frame edges to prevent rusting. Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. Register your product at www.blueox.com to receive alerts about maintenance, updates, and recalls.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (usually Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow these requirements will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Remove four T30 Torx screws from the top edge of the fascia (step 1). In each wheel well, remove three Phillips screws (white) and one T30 Torx screw (gray) (step 2). Remove one Phillips screw from the bottom corner of the fascia on both sides (step 3). Across the center underside, remove three T30 Torx screws, but do not remove the silver screw (step 4).
Using an 8MM socket, remove two screws on the driver side (white) and one screw on the passenger side (gray) from the air deflector. The deflector will not be reinstalled.
Using a 14MM socket, remove four lower bolts from the bumper horn bracket on both sides of the vehicle. These brackets will not be reinstalled.
Hold the fascia as close to its original position as possible, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs, then reinstall the fascia. Before reinstalling, ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly.
On the side of the tail light, use a T20 Torx to remove four screws and remove the back piece. Using a 1/2" drill bit, drill a hole in the plastic piece. Put the wires through the hole and seal around it with silicone. Repeat on both sides of the vehicle.
If the front of your vehicle looks different from the reference image shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation.
