Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2803 is a towing baseplate manufactured by Blue Ox for 2014-2016 Fiat 500L vehicles in Trekking, Easy, Pop, and Lounge trim levels. It is designed to provide a connection point for towing equipment. The baseplate has an attachment tab height of 15 inches and width of 23 inches.
The BX2803 is designed for 2014-2016 Fiat 500L Trekking, Easy, Pop, and Lounge trim levels. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation.
The kit includes: one BX2803 baseplate (61-7249), two attachment tab assemblies with holes (62-3468), one breakaway bracket (102-7056), six 3/8-16 x 1 hex head bolts Grade 5 (201-0443), six 3/8-16 whiz nuts with 14-inch wire (61-4978), two #10-16 x 1 self-drilling screws (201-0654), two #12-14 x 1 self-drilling screws (201-0979), two #10-32 1/2-inch round slotted head screws (201-0192), one 1/4-20 x 3/4-inch hex head bolt (201-0050), one 1/4-20 hex nylon nut (202-0102), two #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), two #10 lock washers (203-0054), one electrical bracket (299-0685), two class III safety cables (226-0046), two 3/8-inch quicklinks (229-0359), and two black cap plug receivers (290-0437). The kit also reuses six existing 3/8-16 x 1-1/4-inch hex head bumper bolts from the vehicle.
Required tools are: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, Phillips screwdriver, torque wrench, drill, tape measure, 13/32-inch drill bit, 10MM socket, 15MM socket, 9/16-inch socket, and T27 Torx. You will also need Loctite Red for all bolt threads.
Yes. The fascia and horn must be removed and reinstalled for baseplate installation. The fascia is secured with six T27 Torx screws on the top edge (three on each side), two Phillips screws and one T27 Torx screw in each wheel well, and ten Phillips screws on the underside (four on each corner and two in the middle). The fascia must be unsnapped from each side and all electrical connections unplugged before removal.
Yes. The bumper horns must be removed to access the mounting points. Remove three bolts from each horn using a 15MM socket and one nut using a 10MM socket on both sides. The bumper horns will not be reinstalled, but the existing bolts will be reused for baseplate mounting.
Yes. After sliding the baseplate onto the vehicle and securing it with the six existing bumper bolts, you must drill six holes through the frame using a 13/32-inch drill bit. There are three holes on each side. Six 3/8-16 x 1-inch bolts are then installed into these holes with 3/8-inch wire nuts on the inside of the frame.
Trim the plastic shrouding around the radiator on both sides of the vehicle. Additionally, on the backside of the fascia, remove the wiring from the clip on both sides and trim the inside edge of the fascia as shown in the instructions. Finally, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstalling it.
Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads and tighten all bolts to the appropriate torque according to the torque chart provided in the manual. For Grade 5 bolts: 3/8-16 bolts = 33 foot-pounds, 1/4-20 bolts = 10 foot-pounds. For Grade 8.8 metric bolts: 10MM = 31 foot-pounds. Specific torque values for the six 3/8-16 x 1-inch bolts drilled through the frame are not specified in the manual.
1. Remove fascia (six T27 Torx screws from top, two Phillips and one T27 Torx from wheel wells, ten Phillips from underside). 2. Remove bumper horns (three 15MM bolts and one 10MM nut per side). 3. Trim plastic shrouding around radiator on both sides. 4. Remove horn bracket nut on passenger side and move horn aside. 5. Slide baseplate onto vehicle and secure with six existing bumper bolts. 6. Drill six holes through frame with 13/32-inch bit (three per side) and install six 3/8-16 x 1-inch bolts with wire nuts. 7. Reinstall horn on passenger side. 8. Install safety cables. 9. Optionally install breakaway switch. 10. Trim fascia wiring and edges. 11. Reinstall fascia.
Yes. Two permanent baseplate safety cables (part 226-0046) are included and must be attached to the baseplate using the provided convenience links and quicklinks (229-0359). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. They are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the frame as shown in the General Information sheet. The photo in Step 10 shows the recommended installation. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet.
No, breakaway switch installation is optional. If you choose to install it, measure 5-1/4 inches from the slot on the driver side of the bumper. Screw the breakaway bracket (102-7056) to the bumper with the #10-16 self-tapping screw (201-0654). Install the breakaway to the bracket with a 1/4-20 bolt (201-0050) and lock nut (202-0102).
The BX2803 attachment tabs have a height of 15 inches and a width of 23 inches.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use if applicable.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. If installing it, drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
Yes. The six existing 3/8-16 x 1-1/4-inch hex head bumper bolts are reused to secure the baseplate to the vehicle. However, do not assume existing holes and hardware are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions.
Place all components that are removed on a flat, sturdy surface. All items will be reinstalled unless otherwise noted after the baseplate is installed. The bumper horns are the only components that will not be reinstalled.
Handling of some cosmetic parts when installing this product may require the use of protective covers, rags, specialty tools, etc. to prevent damage.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface.
Yes. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow these requirements will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Blue Ox provides a three-year limited warranty from the date of delivery to the original retail purchaser. The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. Warranty coverage is valid only if the customer warranty card is returned within 30 days of purchase and a copy of the original invoice accompanies any claim. The warranty is non-transferable and does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification, neglect, failure to properly service and maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint or rust. Exceeding the vehicle's GVWR or towing behind a non-motorized vehicle voids the warranty.
Yes. Ensure that your product is registered online at www.blueox.com. It is crucial to register your product so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.

Yes. The fascia must be removed (six T27 Torx screws from top, two Phillips and one T27 Torx from wheel wells, ten Phillips from underside) and reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads. For Grade 5: 3/8-16 = 33 ft-lbs, 1/4-20 = 10 ft-lbs. For Grade 8.8 metric: 10MM = 31 ft-lbs. Tighten all bolts to the appropriate torque per the manual's torque chart.
Yes. Two permanent baseplate safety cables are included and must be attached to the baseplate and secured to the vehicle frame. They must not rub against hoses or moving parts and are required in addition to legally required towing safety cables.
If the baseplate is in an accident or damaged, it must be replaced and not reused. Do not use if damaged or missing parts, as unseen damage could cause serious injury.
Before each towing trip, inspect for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to spec. Paint cut frame edges to prevent rust. Remove attachment tabs when not in use.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. If connections are not working, check that all plugs are fully seated before proceeding with fascia reinstallation.
If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding. The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and the baseplate may need to be tailored slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances.
Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. If they do, reposition them to secure to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet, ensuring they do not contact wires, hoses, or brake lines.
