Whether you're embarking on a cross-country road trip or just need to move your car around town, the Blue Ox BX2800 Tow Bar Bracket offers reliable, secure towing capability to meet your needs.

Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2800 is designed for 2012-16 Fiat 500 Sport (Non Turbo) models only. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before purchasing or installing.
Required tools include: T30 Torx, Phillips screwdriver, torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, tape measure, 13/32" drill bit, 1/2" drill bit, 10MM socket, 14MM socket, 15MM socket, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, T20 Torx, hammer, large vise grip, and utility knife. You will also need Loctite Red for all bolt threads.
The kit includes: 1 BX2800 baseplate (61-6905), 2 attachment tab assemblies with holes (62-3468), 1 breakaway bracket (102-7197), 1 x 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Grade 5 hex bolt, 2 x #10-32 1/2" round slotted screws, 4 x 3/8"-16 x 1" Grade 5 hex bolts, 4 x 10MM-1.25 x 40MM Grade 8.8 hex bolts, 2 x #10-16 x 1" self-drilling screws, 2 x #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws, 2 x #10-32 hex nuts, 4 x 3/8"-16 nylock nuts, 1 x 1/4"-20 hex nut, 4 x 3/8" flat washers, 2 x #10 lock washers, 4 x 10MM lock washers, 1 x 4-way bracket, 2 x Class III safety cables, 2 x 3/8" quicklinks, and 2 x black cap plug receivers. You will also reuse 4 existing 10MM metric bolts from the vehicle.
No. The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle but is not included. It must be purchased separately.
Yes. The fascia and horn must be removed to install the baseplate. The fascia is reinstalled after baseplate installation is complete. The removal process involves removing multiple screws from the top, bottom, wheel wells, and corners of the fascia, unplugging light connectors, and removing the horn bracket.
Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface for reinstallation later. Use protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage to cosmetic parts. Be aware of the dangers of torque when using power drills and of objects behind the cutting surface when using a reciprocating saw. Ensure you have all required tools and Loctite Red before beginning.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill two side holes using a 13/32" drill bit (one on each side, using the baseplate as a template), and two 1/2" holes in the tail light assembly (one on each side) to route wiring. Drilling is necessary and permanent.
Yes. Trimming and cutting are required. You must cut the upper mounting holes off the fascia guard flush with the top surface. You must use a reciprocating saw to notch the frame on both sides to allow space for the baseplate to slide in. You must trim the fascia opening for the attachment tabs and convenience links using a utility knife. These modifications are permanent.
Yes. Using a hammer, you must flatten the tips on the corners of the bumper bracket on both sides of the vehicle. This is a required modification step.
Yes. Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting. This is recommended to protect the exposed metal created during the frame notching process.
The installation sequence is: (1) Remove fascia and horn; (2) Remove and modify fascia guard; (3) Flatten bumper bracket corners; (4) Mark and notch frame with reciprocating saw; (5) Slide baseplate in place and install bolts in frame mount holes; (6) Drill side holes using baseplate as template; (7) Install bolts through passenger and driver side holes; (8) Attach safety cables; (9) Optionally install breakaway bracket; (10) Trim fascia opening; (11) Drill and route wiring through tail lights; (12) Reinstall fascia and horn.
After notching the frame on both sides, slide the baseplate in place, aligning it with the existing holes in the end of the frame mount. Reinstall the existing bolts in the bottom two holes. In the top two holes, insert 10MM-1.25 x 40MM hex bolts with 10MM lock washers and 3/8" flat washers. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads and tighten to the appropriate torque specification.
Using the baseplate as a template, drill two side holes with a 13/32" drill bit (one on each side). Then insert 3/8"-16 x 1" bolts with 3/8"-16 nylock nuts. On the passenger side, you may need to move the windshield washer reservoir to the side to access the hole. Reattach the washer reservoir after installation. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads and tighten to the appropriate torque.
The breakaway bracket installation is optional. If you choose to install it, center it between the electrical rod and the convenience link, mark and cut a hole through the plastic guard with a utility knife, attach it to the lower frame with two #10-16 x 1" self-drilling screws, and attach the breakaway to the bracket with a 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex bolt and 1/4"-20 hex nut.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The manual shows the recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. These cables are strongly recommended and must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed.
On both sides: (1) Remove the four screws from the back of the tail light using a T20 Torx and remove the back piece. (2) Using a 1/2" drill bit, drill a hole in the metal piece, put the wires through, and seal with silicone. (3) Using a 1/2" drill bit, drill a hole in the triangle part of the back piece, put the wires through, seal with silicone, and reinstall the screws. This routing is recommended for the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit.
For Grade 5 inch bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 257 ft-lbs. The BX2800 kit includes 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Grade 5 bolts and 3/8"-16 x 1" Grade 5 bolts.
For Grade 8.8 metric bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs, 14MM = 89 ft-lbs, 16MM = 161 ft-lbs, 18MM = 222 ft-lbs. The BX2800 kit includes 10MM-1.25 x 40MM Grade 8.8 bolts.
The BX2800 attachment tab height is 13-1/2" and the width is 20".
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2012-16 Fiat 500 Sport. The manual shows the possible location for this kit routing through the tail lights. The kit is not included and must be purchased separately.
Unplug the two light connectors in the fascia by releasing the clip on the bottom side of each plug. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged back in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
The BX2800 baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Reference your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with the BX2800 tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. Use protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage to cosmetic parts during installation.
Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. Verify that the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Inspect all bolts to ensure they are tightened to the appropriate torque specifications with Loctite Red applied. Check that the baseplate is properly aligned and all fasteners are secure before towing.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use if applicable.
Yes. Ensure that your BX2800 baseplate is registered online at www.blueox.com. It is crucial to register your product so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
The BX2800 is designed for 2012-16 Fiat 500 Sport (Non Turbo) models only. If your vehicle's front end looks different from the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before purchasing.
You will need: T30 and T20 Torx, Phillips screwdriver, torque wrench, drill with 13/32" and 1/2" bits, reciprocating saw, tape measure, 10MM/14MM/15MM/9/16" sockets, 9/16" wrench, hammer, large vise grip, utility knife, and Loctite Red.
Yes. You must drill two 13/32" side holes and two 1/2" holes in the tail lights. You must use a reciprocating saw to notch the frame on both sides and cut the fascia guard mounting holes. These are permanent modifications.
Yes. The fascia and horn must be removed for installation and reinstalled afterward. This involves removing multiple screws, unplugging light connectors, and removing the horn bracket.
Tighten 10MM Grade 8.8 bolts to 31 ft-lbs. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
Tighten 3/8" Grade 5 bolts to 33 ft-lbs. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
The BX2800 is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Reference your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended but not included. It must be purchased separately and routed through 1/2" holes drilled in the tail lights.
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances. If alignment issues persist, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 for assistance.
Align the fascia as close to its original position as possible, then mark and trim the opening for the attachment tabs and convenience links with a utility knife. The fascia opening must be trimmed to accommodate the new baseplate components. If the fascia still does not fit properly, verify that all baseplate components are properly positioned and that the frame notches are correctly sized.
