Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, TOYOTA SCION XD (Part #FDRWBX3778) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, the BX3778 is designed for 2008-14 Scion XD vehicles. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. Minor adjustments may be necessary to compensate for manufacturer tolerances, including filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods or bending end plates.
No. Due to the design of the removable attachment tabs on the BX3778, the RangeFinder II tow bar cannot be used with this baseplate.
Most adapters cannot be used with the BX3778 baseplate. Only the BX8833 and BX88151 adapters are compatible. All other adapters are not compatible due to the design of the removable attachment tabs.
The attachment tab height is 14 inches and the attachment tab width is 24 inches.
Required tools are: Loctite RED, small flat screwdriver, 9/16" socket, flat screwdriver, 10MM socket, 14MM socket, 13/32" drill bit, and reciprocating saw.
Yes. A reciprocating saw is required. The installation involves trimming the frame support webbing, bumper, and plastic components on both sides of the vehicle.
Yes. Loctite RED must be used on all bolts before tightening. The manual explicitly states: 'BE SURE TO USE LOCTITE® RED ON ALL BOLTS BEFORE TIGHTENING.'
The fascia, washer reservoir, and horn are removed and reinstalled during installation. Additionally, plastic push pins from the radiator cover (driver's side and passenger side) and screw pins near the front tires are removed. The bumper core is also removed.
Two plastic push pins are removed from the radiator cover on the driver's side, and three plastic push pins are removed on the passenger side. All push pins should be set aside for later reinstallation.
Yes. Drilling is required. A 13/32" drill bit is used to drill the bottom two holes using the baseplate as a template, and the back two holes are drilled during side plate installation.
Yes. Trimming is required using a reciprocating saw. This includes trimming the frame support webbing, bumper, and plastic components. Specific cuts are: 5/8" up and across on the driver's side after horn removal; 3 1/4" up following the seam and connecting straight across; a notch 1" up from the bottom continuing 3 1/2" up in the lower frame support webbing on both sides; 2" back on the bottom side of the bumper on both sides; and plastic 3" down and 1 3/4" across below the frame.
After trimming, spray cut edges of the frame with a good quality paint to prevent rusting.
The torque specification for 3/8" Grade 5 bolts is 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart on the front page of the installation instructions, and Loctite RED must be used on all bolts before tightening.
Torque specifications for inch bolts are: 1/4" Grade 5 = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" Grade 5 = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" Grade 5 = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" Grade 5 = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" Grade 5 = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" Grade 5 = 154 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 230 ft-lbs. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite RED.
The baseplate uses 3/8-16 bolts in three lengths: 3/8 x 1 1/2" bolts (part 201-0440, qty 4) for the side frame extension holes, 3/8 x 1 1/4" bolts (part 201-0368, qty 8) for the bottom holes, and 3/8 x 1" bolts (part 201-0443, qty 4) for the side plate. All bolts are Grade 5 and must be used with 3/8" lock washers and 3/8" hex nuts. Loctite RED must be applied before tightening.
The tightening sequence is: (1) Insert and tighten the 3/8 x 1 1/4" bolts with 3/8" lock washer and 1" nut plate in the bottom first, then tighten the side bolts. (2) Start the 3/8 x 1 1/2" bolts in the existing frame extension holes on both sides. (3) Put the side plate on with one 3/8 x 1" bolt with 3/8" lock washer and 3/8" hex nut, while drilling the back two holes. (4) Loosen the first bolt, insert 3/8 x 1 1/2" bolt, the spacer plate and 3/8" lock washer with 3/8" hex nut in the back and tighten. (5) Then tighten the front two bolts. All bolts must use Loctite RED.
Yes. The installation uses two existing holes in the frame extension. The 3/8 x 1 1/2" bolts are started in these existing holes. However, the manual warns that even though bolts are there, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use hardware supplied in the hardware kit or existing hardware specified in the baseplate towing installation instructions.
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2008-14 Scion XD, but the manual does not state it is required. The manual notes that all electrical connections must be plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia.
All electrical connections must be plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia. This is a critical safety check to ensure the towing system is operational.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The BX3778 includes two 36" Class III safety cables (part 226-0046) that must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. However, these cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be attached from the provided convenience link on the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The recommended installation shows attachment to the frame of the vehicle. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines, as this could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use if applicable.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
The hardware kit includes: 1 welded baseplate (61-6483), 1 driver's side support plate (101-7174), 1 passenger's side support plate (101-7175), 2 spacer plates (102-6861), 8 weld nut plates (61-5208), 4 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" Grade 5 hex bolts (201-0440), 8 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" Grade 5 hex bolts (201-0368), 4 3/8-16 x 1" Grade 5 hex bolts (201-0443), 16 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), 8 3/8-16 hex nuts (202-0003), 2 #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), 2 10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws (201-0192), 2 #10 lock washers (203-0054), 2 #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), 2 4-way connector adapters (101-5822), 2 removable attachment tab assemblies (62-3468), 2 receiver cap plugs (290-0437), 2 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and 2 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046).
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow these instructions will void the manufacturer's warranty.

3/8" Grade 5 bolts are torqued to 33 foot-pounds. All bolts must use Loctite RED before tightening.
The BX8869 is recommended for the 2008-14 Scion XD but not stated as required. All electrical connections must be tested and functioning before reinstalling the fascia.
Inspect for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Verify all electrical connections are functioning. Ensure Loctite RED is applied to all bolts and they are tightened to specification.
The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. Minor adjustments may be necessary to compensate for manufacturer tolerances. These adjustments may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates. If the front of the vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, call Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051.
If additional options interfere with the recommended mounting location, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines, as this could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
