Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, TOYOTA SCION TC (Part #FDRWBX3796) is designed to fit the 2016 Scion iM.
The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, TOYOTA SCION TC (Part #FDRWBX3796) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The BX3796 baseplate is designed for 2014-16 Scion tC, 2016 Scion iM, and 2017-18 Toyota Corolla iM models only. Before purchasing, verify your vehicle matches one of these applications. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 to confirm fitment.
The attachment tab height is 13-1/2" and the attachment tab width is 24".
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding your vehicle's GVWR will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must not tow loads that exceed your vehicle's GVWR rating. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Required tools are: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, torque wrench, drill, 3/8" drill bit, 10MM socket, 7/16" socket, 7/16" wrench, 9/16" socket, 9/16" wrench, and 5/16" nut driver. You will also need Loctite Red for all bolt threads.

Yes. The fascia, air baffle (on iM models), and windshield washer fluid reservoir must be removed before baseplate installation and reinstalled afterward. The manual provides detailed removal steps for both Scion tC and Scion iM models. Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface and reinstall them after the baseplate is installed, unless otherwise noted.
Yes. Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill multiple 3/8" holes through the frame at specific locations: reinforcement holes on both sides (step 6), lower back holes on both sides (step 8), front holes on both sides (step 9), and remaining sideplate holes on both sides (step 10). Do not drill the upper front hole on the passenger side, as the factory hole will be used for reservoir reinstallation. Be aware of AC condenser lines on the passenger side when drilling.
Yes. Trimming is required. You must trim a notch in the frame face on both sides using a reciprocating saw, measuring up 1" and 4-1/2" from the bottom of the frame face, 3/4" deep. On tC models, trim the plastic shielding under the bumper and towards the outer edge, and remove the plastic cover along the side of the frame on the driver side. On iM models, trim the plastic shielding under the bumper and remove the lower section. Be aware of AC condenser lines on the passenger side when cutting.
Yes. The notch trimmed in the frame face and plastic shielding trimming are permanent modifications. On tC models, the plastic reinforcement on the driver side will not be reinstalled. These modifications cannot be reversed.
For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 257 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 8.8 bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs, 14MM = 89 ft-lbs, 16MM = 161 ft-lbs, 18MM = 222 ft-lbs.
For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 230 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 380 ft-lbs. Yes. You must use a sufficient amount of Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening. This is required for all bolts throughout the installation process.
Yes. On iM models only, spacer plates (part 101-9252) must be installed between the baseplate and frame prior to bolting. This is noted in step 9 of the installation instructions.
The reinforcement bolts drilled in step 6 are installed to reinforce the vehicle sheet metal and prevent frame delamination. These bolts are drilled in approximate locations on both driver and passenger sides prior to baseplate installation.
No. The upper back bolt on the windshield washer reservoir will not be reinstalled due to the use of spacers during the BX3796 installation. The reservoir is reinstalled with spacers and 6MM and 1/4" hardware provided in the kit.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the vehicle frame. The manual shows two recommended installation options. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install cables on both sides of the vehicle. Do not mount cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
No. The breakaway switch installation is optional. If you choose to install it, attach the bracket to the lip of the bumper at the desired location using the #12 screw provided, then attach the breakaway to the bracket using the 1/4" hardware provided.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. This is critical to verify that no electrical systems were damaged during the installation process.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
After installation, verify that all electrical connections are plugged in and functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the appropriate torque specifications with Loctite Red applied. Check that the fascia is properly trimmed around the convenience links and attachment tabs. Verify that safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Paint cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting. The baseplate should remain installed as long as you own the vehicle.
The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for the BX3796 baseplate on this vehicle. While not explicitly stated as required in the installation instructions, it is recommended for proper electrical integration with your towing system.
Yes. It is crucial to register your product online at www.blueox.com so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls. Additionally, warranty coverage requires that the customer warranty card be returned within 30 days of purchase.
Blue Ox provides a three-year limited warranty from the date of delivery covering defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. The warranty is non-transferable and valid only to the original retail purchaser. Warranty coverage requires the customer warranty card to be returned within 30 days of purchase and a copy of the original invoice. The warranty does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification, neglect, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint, or rust. Register your warranty at http://blueox.com/warranty/
No. You must use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use genuine parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
If needed, bend the temperature sensor up slightly to allow easier baseplate installation. This is a minor adjustment that may be necessary due to vehicle manufacturer tolerances.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. Be aware of AC condenser lines on the passenger side when drilling. Ensure you have adequate clearance and visibility before drilling each hole.
When using a reciprocating saw to trim the frame notch, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. Be aware of AC condenser lines on the passenger side when cutting. After trimming, use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting.
Place all components that are removed (fascia, air baffle, windshield washer reservoir) on a flat, sturdy surface. All items will be reinstalled after the baseplate is installed unless otherwise noted in the instructions. Keep all removed parts organized and protected from damage.
Yes. The installation varies between Scion tC, Scion iM, and Toyota Corolla iM models. Key differences include: tC models require removal of plastic reinforcement and plastic cover on the driver side; iM models require removal of an air baffle and use spacer plates between the baseplate and frame; iM models require different fascia removal steps. Follow the specific steps for your vehicle model.
The BX3796 is designed for 2014-16 Scion tC, 2016 Scion iM, and 2017-18 Toyota Corolla iM only. Verify your vehicle matches one of these applications before purchasing.
You will need: large vise grip, flat screwdriver, torque wrench, drill with 3/8" bit, 10MM socket, 7/16" socket and wrench, 9/16" socket and wrench, 5/16" nut driver, and Loctite Red.
Tighten 3/8" Grade 5 bolts to 33 ft-lbs. Use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.
The dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. While the baseplate was designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances. Contact Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051 for guidance on specific fit issues.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. If electrical systems are not working after installation, verify that all connectors are fully seated and that no wires were damaged during removal and reinstallation of the fascia, air baffle, or reservoir.
