Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1509 is designed for 1997-05 Buick Century models. The baseplate attachment tabs are 24 inches center to center with a height of 13 inches. Installation requires removal of the front fascia and headlight assemblies, drilling, and trimming of the air dam and metal frame sections.
The manual states that the BX8869 is available for the vehicle, indicating compatibility with the Buick Century when using the BX1509 baseplate. Refer to the BX8869 installation instructions for specific details on its installation and use.
The following tools are required: 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 13/32" drill bit, vise grips, hacksaw, and Loctite. A drill capable of using a 13/32" bit is also necessary.
The BX1509 includes: one baseplate weldment (61-5796), eight 3/8-16 nut plates (61-5208), eight 3/8-16 x 1.5" Grade 5 bolts (201-0440), eight 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), two #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), two 4-way connector adapters (101-5822), two #10-32 x 0.5" slot round head screws (201-0192), two #10 lock washers (203-0054), two #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), two attachment assemblies (62-3469), two 36" baseplate safety cables (226-0046), two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and two receiver cap plugs (290-0437).
Yes, the headlight assemblies must be removed. Lift the two white clips on the back side of each headlight assembly, pull the assembly forward, unplug the electrical connector, and set aside. This is done before removing the fascia.
Yes, the front fascia must be removed. First remove five push pins from the top side of the fascia, then remove two metric bolts behind the headlight assembly (10MM socket, both sides), two metric bolts forward of the front tire (7MM socket), and four bolts under the front edge of the fascia (7MM socket). Remove two push pins from the lower fascia opening and five push pins from the bottom side. Pull the fascia forward and set it aside with the bracket under the metal bumper.
Yes. Remove four metric bolts from the windshield washer reservoir using a 10MM socket to relieve the opening in the frame. Remove one metric bolt from the horn bracket using a 10MM socket and set aside. These components are reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Yes, drilling is necessary. Using the baseplate as a template, drill four holes with a 13/32" drill bit on both sides of the vehicle. The baseplate is held up as far as possible and aligned forward to a dimple in the frame, then clamped with vise grips before drilling.
Yes, trimming is required on both sides. The air dam must be trimmed according to a photo to open the area for the baseplate. Additionally, metal must be cut and removed using a hacksaw according to a photo, on both sides of the vehicle.
A 13/32" drill bit is required. Four holes are drilled on each side of the vehicle using the baseplate as a template.
Eight 3/8-16 x 1.5" Grade 5 bolts (part 201-0440) are used, along with eight 3/8" lock washers (203-0010) and eight 3/8-16 nut plates (61-5208). All bolts must be treated with Loctite before tightening. The manual does not specify a torque value; contact Blue Ox for torque specifications.
Yes, Loctite must be used on all bolts before tightening. The manual specifies using Loctite Red on all bolts and tightening to recommended specifications during maintenance and inspection.
Use only Grade 5 replacement bolts, which is the grade of the bolts included with the baseplate (3/8-16 x 1.5" Grade 5, part 201-0440). Do not substitute bolts of a different grade. Repair parts may be ordered through a Blue Ox dealer or distributor.
Hold the baseplate up as far as possible and align it forward to a dimple in the frame. Clamp the baseplate to the frame using vise grips. Use the baseplate as a template to drill the four holes (13/32" drill bit, both sides). Insert the nut plates into the frame opening to align with the drill holes, then tighten the bolts and lock washers.
The manual states that dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable. While the baseplate holes were designed for easy installation, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear.
Reinstall the windshield washer reservoir, horn (according to the photo in step 9), fascia support, and fascia. Be certain that all electrical connections are plugged in properly before completing the installation.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX1509 includes two 36" baseplate safety cables (226-0046) and two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
No. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. Do not mount permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Obtain replacement parts from Blue Ox or an authorized dealer.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.
