Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1504 is designed specifically for 1997-2000 Buick Park Avenue models. The manual does not indicate any variations by year, trim level, or drivetrain within this range.
The kit includes: one baseplate weldment (61-5198), two short braces (102-5474), two long braces (102-5473), six 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0051), four 1/2-13 x 1 1/4 hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0011), seven 1/2-13 hex nuts (202-0005), three 1/2 nut plates with 30" wire (61-5199), ten 1/2 lock washers (203-0012), two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046), and four 3/8 zinc-plated quicklinks (229-0359). The tow bar and safety cables are sold separately and come with their own instructions.
Yes, bumper removal is required. You must remove the screws fastening the fender well molding to the bumper molding (two on each side), remove the two 10mm bolts holding the quarter panels to the bumper molding, remove the six push pins holding the lower plastic rock guard, and then remove the bumper from the vehicle.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a center hole in the aluminum bumper to attach the baseplate, then drill the remaining outside holes in the bumper. You also must drill four 1/2 inch holes in the vehicle frame to attach the braces. A 1/2 inch drill bit is required.
Yes, the lower plastic belly pan must be trimmed. After the braces are installed, you must trim the belly pan so it fits around the braces. Cut a notch in the center and outside edges of the belly pan and slide it over the center brace instead of using the center push pin, which will not be used.
Required tools are: 10mm wrench, 10mm socket, 3/4 wrench, 3/4 socket, socket extension, 1/2 inch drill bit, c-clamps, utility knife, and measuring tape. You will also need Loctite Red (threadlocker) to apply to all bolts.
First, bolt the four braces to the baseplate using 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts with nuts and lock washers, but do not tighten completely. The two short braces go on the outside and the long brace goes in the center. Hold the braces to the frame and drill 1/2 inch holes. Bolt the outside braces to the frame using 1/2 x 1 1/4 bolts with 1/2 inch nuts and washers. Do not bolt the center brace to the frame yet. After trimming the belly pan, bolt the center brace to the frame using the same hardware as the outside braces.
Yes. The installer must watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires, and hoses during installation. The baseplate and braces must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines, as improper installation could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. Permanent baseplate safety cables must also not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
Loctite Red (threadlocker) must be applied to each bolt to ensure the bolts will not loosen while the vehicle is being towed. It must be used on all bolts attaching the baseplate to the bumper and all bolts attaching the braces to the frame.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The kit includes two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (part 226-0046). These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. They are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications and that Loctite Red has been applied to all bolts.
Yes, you should register your BX1504 baseplate online at www.blueox.com. Registration is crucial so you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
Remove the attachment tabs when not in use, if applicable to your installation.
The attachment tabs will extend through the grill opening approximately four inches.
Hold the baseplate up to the bottom side of the aluminum bumper at its center and clamp it to the frame. Ensure the baseplate is square before drilling and bolting.
The baseplate is attached to the bumper using 1/2 x 1 1/2 hex bolts Grade 5 (part 201-0051) with Loctite Red applied to each bolt.
The outside braces are attached to the frame using 1/2 x 1 1/4 hex bolts Grade 5 (part 201-0011) with 1/2 inch nuts (part 202-0005) and washers (part 203-0012), with Loctite Red applied to each bolt. The center brace uses the same hardware.
No. When bolting the braces to the baseplate using 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts with nuts and lock washers, do not tighten completely. Tighten them fully only after the braces are positioned and bolted to the frame.
The center brace is left unbolted to the frame initially to make it easier to fasten the lower plastic belly pan. After the belly pan is trimmed and fitted over the center brace, the center brace is then bolted to the frame.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pins and clips are lost. Contact the manufacturer or your installer for replacement parts.
