Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The front fascia, blinker assemblies, styrofoam bumper, and lower air dam must be removed during installation and reinstalled afterward. For 2002–2005 models, this includes removing metric bolts from blinker assemblies, pushpins from the fascia top edge, pushpins from wheel wells, metric bolts from fascia corners, pushpins and bolts from the bottom metal bumper, and pushpins from the lower air dam. For 2006 models, the procedure differs slightly; refer to the specific steps in the manual.
Yes, drilling is required. Using the baseplate as a template, three holes on each side of the vehicle must be drilled with a 13/32" drill bit into the frame rail. The baseplate is clamped in position and used as a drilling guide.
Using a hacksaw or reciprocating saw, the outside corner of the lower bumper bracket adjacent to the outer frame must be cut away on both sides of the vehicle. This relieves the area for baseplate installation. Additionally, for 2002–2005 models, the bumper tabs may need to be trimmed as needed when the fascia is held in place.
Yes. Dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. Minor adjustments may include filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, and/or bending end plates to compensate for manufacturer tolerances. These adjustments are normal and expected.
According to the torque chart on page 1, Grade 5 3/8" bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. The installation instructions specify that Loctite RED must be applied to all bolts before tightening, and all bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart on the front page or page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions (not provided in this manual).
The attachment tab height is 15 inches and the attachment tab width is 18 inches.
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. Installation location differs by model year: for 2006 models, the bulb hole is drilled in the upper cell of the tail light assembly after removing two bolts with a 15 Torx wrench. For 2002–2005 models, refer to the bulb and socket installation instructions section of the manual.
For 2005–2006 models, a supplemental electrical bracket (101-6845) is used to lower the electrical connector so it mounts to the baseplate without interfering with the license plate. It is attached using a #10-32 x 1/2" slot round-head screw, #10 lock washer, and #10-32 hex nut.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The kit includes two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046) and two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. They must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The manual provides illustrations of recommended arrangements. It is the installer's responsibility to watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires, hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame.
Confirm the towability and pre-towing procedures for your vehicle with the owner's manual or contact the vehicle's manufacturer for specific towing procedures. It is the owner's responsibility to hook up all towing equipment per manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
Before installing the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. After installation, it is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.

Use a replacement bolt of the same grade as the original. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Refer to the parts list in the manual to identify the correct bolt specification. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox dealer or distributor, or call Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). For your safety and the preservation of your baseplate, always use the correct parts.
