Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX3739 baseplate is designed for Toyota Avalon 2000-03 model years. The attachment tabs are 22 3/4 inches center to center with a height of 14 inches.
The BX3739 is designed specifically for Toyota Avalon 2000-03 model years. The manual does not confirm compatibility with 2004 or newer models. Contact the manufacturer or a Blue Ox dealer to verify fitment for your vehicle year.
Yes. The front bumper fascia and metal bumper must be removed for baseplate installation. The fascia is removed by taking out push pins from the top, Phillips screws underneath the front end just forward of the tires on both sides, and hex bolts underneath the fascia above the front tires on both sides.
Yes. Installation requires drilling two 3/8 inch holes on both sides of the vehicle frame and one 1/2 inch hole in the center of the baseplate. These holes are permanent modifications to the vehicle frame.
Two drill bits are required: a 3/8 inch drill bit for the side holes and a 1/2 inch drill bit for the center hole.
The following tools are required: 9/16 inch wrench, 3/4 inch wrench, 3/8 inch drill bit, 1/2 inch drill bit, and Loctite.
The kit includes: one baseplate weldment (61-5476), one 1/2-13 x 2 bolt plate with 26 inch wire (61-5548), two 3/8 nut plates with wire (61-5208), four 8MM-1.25 hex nuts, four 8MM lock washers, four 8MM flat washers, two 3/8-16 x 1 1/4 hex head bolts, two 3/8 lock washers, one 1/2 lock washer, one 1/2-13 hex nut, two #12-14 x 1 inch self-drilling screws, two #10-32 hex nuts, two #10 lock washers, two #10-32 x 1/2 slot round head screws, two 4-way connectors, two 36 inch Class III baseplate safety cables, and four 3/8 inch quicklinks.
No. When you first hold the baseplate over the bolt in step 5, do not tighten the fittings. Tighten all fittings only after drilling the 3/8 inch holes on both sides and the 1/2 inch center hole, according to the torque chart in the general instruction sheet.
The manual references a torque chart in a separate general instruction sheet, which is not included in this document. Contact the manufacturer or your Blue Ox dealer for the specific torque values. The manual emphasizes that all bolts must be tightened to the recommended specifications and that Loctite Red should be used on all bolts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. Two 36 inch Class III safety cables (part 226-0046) are included in the kit. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines.
No. Permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for legally required safety cables that attach the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Both types of cables are necessary.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. The installer must watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and ensure the baseplate is not positioned against these components. Improper installation against wires or hoses could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications and that Loctite Red has been applied to all bolts.
Yes. The manual recommends removing the attachment tabs when not in use, if applicable.
