Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX3731 fits 1997-99 Toyota Camry and 2000-01 Toyota Camry with a 4-cylinder engine only. If your 2000 Camry has a 4-cylinder engine and is not an LE model, it is compatible. If it is a 2000-01 LE model or has a V6 engine, this baseplate does not fit.
No. The manual states that using the BX3731 baseplate with any tow bar not approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Company invalidates the limited warranty. You must use a tow bar approved by the manufacturer.
Yes. The manual states that bumper removal is required to allow installation of the baseplate. The bumper must be removed before you can access the mounting points and drill the necessary holes.
You must remove: the bumper, turn signals, headlights, and plastic covers around the tie down mounts. The turn signals are removed by extracting a plastic rivet outboard of the headlight assembly. The headlights are unbolted with a 10mm wrench (one bolt on top, one hidden by the turn signal). The plastic covers are removed by unbolting fasteners on top of the bumper and in the grill opening.
Two hole sizes are required: 17/32" holes in the bumper for the upper mounts, and 13/32" holes in the tie down mounts for the lower mounts. The baseplate is used as a template to mark hole locations. A 17/32" drill bit and 13/32" drill bit are required tools.
Required tools are: small flat screwdriver, 10mm wrench, 3/4" wrench, 9/16" wrench, 13mm wrench, drill, 17/32" drill bit, 13/32" drill bit, and Loctite Blue. These tools are needed to remove fasteners, drill mounting holes, and secure the baseplate.
The baseplate includes: 1 weldment baseplate (61-4957), 2 nut plates with 14-inch wire (61-5342), 2 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 hex bolts Grade 5, 2 3/8-16 x 1 1/2 hex bolts Grade 5, 2 3/8-16 hex nuts, 4 8mm-1.25 hex nuts, 16 3/8 flat washers, 2 3/8 lock washers, 2 1/2 lock washers, 4 8mm lock washers, 4 8mm flat washers, 2 baseplate safety cables (36" CL III), and 2 quicklinks (3/8, ZP).
Locate the plastic rivet outboard of the headlight assembly. Pull out the center plug of the rivet, then pull the rivet out of the hole. Pull the turn signal forward and unplug the bulb. Repeat on the opposite side.
Using a 10mm wrench, unbolt the headlights. There is one bolt on top of the headlight and another bolt hidden by the turn signal. The assemblies are held in position by snap latches; use a small screwdriver to push the tabs in, then pull the assembly out and unplug the bulbs. Repeat for the opposite side.
On top of the bumper there are two bolts and a plastic rivet to remove. In the top of the grill opening there are two plastic rivets to remove. Pull the black cover back inside the fender well. Where the bumper meets the front fender panel there is a bolt on each side that must be removed.
After removing all bolts and rivets from the plastic covers, locate two tabs: one at the base of the turn signal opening and one on the inside of the headlight opening. Release these tabs and pull the bumper forward and off.
Under the bumper mounts there are two stud bolts on each side. The slotted top holes in the end mounts of the baseplate fit over these studs. Snug up the 8mm nuts and washers to hold the baseplate in position temporarily while you drill the remaining holes.
The upper mounts should be flush against the bottom of the metal inner bumper. Using the baseplate as a template, drill 17/32" holes in the bumper. Use the 1/2" bolts, washers, and nut plates supplied. Apply Loctite before tightening. Use a pry bar to insert the nut plate through the end of the bumper. Apply Loctite and tighten the 8mm nuts on the studs.
The remaining holes in the end mounts align with the tie down mounts. Using the baseplate as a template, drill a 13/32" hole in the tie down mount. Bolt the baseplate to the tie down using the 3/8" hardware provided. Use as many flat washers as necessary to fill the space between the baseplate and the tie down. Apply Loctite and tighten the bolts completely. Make sure all bolts are tight.
Reverse steps 2-5 to replace the bumper, turn signals, headlights, and plastic covers. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to the instructions included in their packages.
The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable. If a bolt does not clear a hole, it may be necessary to file the hole slightly to allow the bolt to fit.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX3731 includes two 36" CL III safety cables and two 3/8" quicklinks. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Safety cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. They must be used in conjunction with, and are not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines, as this could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications.
Yes. It is crucial to register your BX3731 baseplate online at www.blueox.com so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
The baseplate weldment part number is 61-4957.
