Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes, the BX3740 is designed for the 2001 Toyota Camry with both 6-cylinder and 4-cylinder LE models. However, the manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable, and it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear during installation.
Yes. If you are using a car-mounted tow bar with the BX3740 baseplate, you will need either a BX88133 or BX88135 adapter. Consult the General Instruction Sheet included with the baseplate to determine which adapter is correct for your tow bar.
The following tools are required: 10mm wrench, 12mm wrench, 9/16" wrench, 3/4" wrench, 17/32" drill bit, vise grips, and Loctite Red. A pry bar is also needed to insert nut plates through the end of the bumper.
The baseplate includes: 2 weldment nut plates with 14-inch wire (61-5342), 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 bolts, 3/8-16 x 1 1/2 bolts, 3/8-16 and 8mm hex nuts, flat and lock washers in multiple sizes, self-drilling screws, 4-way connectors, and 2 baseplate safety cables (36" Class III) with 3/8" quicklinks. See the Parts List on page 3 for complete quantities and part numbers.
You must remove: turn signals (by removing a plastic rivet outboard of the headlight assembly), headlights (using a 10mm wrench to remove two bolts on top and one hidden by the turn signal assembly), the plastic bumper facia, plastic covers around the tie down mounts, and the lower plastic rock guard from the front (temporarily). The anti-vibration device on each side must also be removed with 10mm and 12mm sockets and will NOT be reinstalled.
Yes. The temperature sensor is located on the bottom side of the metal inner bumper and must be moved before installing the baseplate. The manual directs you to refer to the photo in step 6 for location details, but does not specify the relocation procedure or final position.
Yes. All holes require drilling. You must drill 17/32" holes in the metal inner bumper for the upper mounts, and 13/32" holes in the tie down mounts for the end mounts. The baseplate is used as a template for hole placement.

The baseplate is secured to the metal inner bumper using 1/2" bolts (1/2-13 x 1 1/2), washers, and nut plates (61-5342). Loctite Red must be applied before tightening. Additionally, 8mm nuts are tightened on the studs with Loctite applied.
The baseplate is secured to the tie down mounts using 3/8" bolts (3/8-16 x 1 1/2) with 3/8-16 hex nuts. Flat washers should be used as necessary to fill the space between the baseplate and the tie down. Loctite Red must be applied before tightening all bolts completely.

Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX3740 includes 2 baseplate safety cables (36" Class III) with 3/8" quicklinks. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. However, these cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines, as improper installation could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red.
