Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Blue Ox recommends that baseplate installation be performed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge necessary to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting (402) 385-3051. The installation involves removal and reinstallation of multiple vehicle components, drilling, trimming, and electrical work.
The following components must be removed and reinstalled: lower plastic cover, upper plastic cover, tail lights, fascia cover, fascia, belly pan, mounting bracket, and (on ACC-equipped models) the Adaptive Cruise Control bracket. All removed items are reinstalled after baseplate installation unless otherwise noted.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill two holes on the passenger side using the baseplate as a template with a 1/2" drill bit (Step 17). You may also need to ream out the top hole on the driver side. Additionally, you must drill the bottom hole on each side of the baseplate with a 1/2" drill bit (Step 19).
Yes. Two modifications are required: (1) Using a saw, cut the two vertical supports of the mounting bracket for the belly pan approximately 2 inches from the top and flush with the top of the lower cross member, then remove the cutout pieces (Step 14). (2) Trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs to fit properly (Step 23). Additionally, you should paint cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. After cutting frame components, use good quality paint to spray cut edges to prevent rusting.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart, 1/2" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 78 foot-pounds. However, the manual does not specify the grade of the 1/2"-13 bolts supplied in the kit. All bolts must be treated with Loctite Red on the threads before tightening.
The manual provides a torque chart for metric and inch bolts in Grade 5 and Grade 8 (for inch bolts) and Grade 8.8 and 10.9 (for metric bolts). You must tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided unless otherwise specified in the instructions. All bolt threads must be treated with Loctite Red before tightening. The specific grade of each bolt in the kit is listed in the parts list on page 3.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart, 1/4" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 10 foot-pounds.
The BX8848 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle, but the manual does not explicitly state whether it is required. Contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for clarification on whether this kit is necessary for your specific installation.
During installation, you must unplug: (1) two electrical connections on the passenger side of the vehicle (Step 9), (2) the electrical connection on the driver side of the vehicle, which is gray in color (Step 10), and (3) the washer tube on the driver side (Step 11). All electrical connections must be plugged back in and verified to be functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia (Step 23).
Failure to read and follow the installation instructions could result in separation of the towed vehicle from the tow bar, causing property damage, loss of towed vehicle, personal injury or death. The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR; exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and should not be used again, as an accident can cause unseen damage.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be attached from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame using the provided quicklinks and convenience link tabs on the baseplate. The cables must not rub against any hoses or moving parts, and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. These cables are strongly recommended and are to be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. After the fascia is reinstalled, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs as needed.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten them to the recommended specifications. Additionally, you should register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls.
