Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

You must remove three items: the front bumper and lower trim panel (as an assembly), and the tie-down bracket from each side of the truck. The tie-down brackets are stamped and bent metal brackets with a round hole facing downward. Inspect the bolts from the tie-down brackets for reuse, as four of the eight baseplate mounting bolts are existing factory bolts.
You will need the following sockets: 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, and 3/4". You will also need Locktite Blue (threadlocker). A General Instruction Sheet is included with the baseplate and should be read before beginning installation.
The kit includes: one baseplate (61-3267), two straight tab handle nuts (61-3268), two bent tab handle nuts (61-3269), four 1/2-13 x 1 1/2" Grade 5 hex head bolts (201-0051), four 1/2" lock washers (203-0012), two 36" safety cables (226-0046), and four 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359). Four of the eight mounting bolts are existing factory bolts removed from the tie-down brackets.
The baseplate uses eight bolts total: four on each side of the truck. Four bolts are existing factory bolts (removed from the tie-down brackets) that mount through the rear holes of the baseplate, aligning with the original tie-down bracket holes. Four new bolts (provided in the kit) mount through the front mounting tabs into the front crossmember of the truck using 1/2" nuts with lock washers.
1. Remove the front bumper and lower trim panel as an assembly. 2. Remove the tie-down bracket from each side and inspect the bolts for reuse. 3. Position the baseplate on the truck, aligning the rear holes with the original tie-down bracket holes, and hand-start the four factory bolts with Locktite (do not tighten yet). 4. Insert the bent tab handle nuts through the holes in the front crossmember, inboard of each inner mounting tab, and hand-start a 1/2" bolt with lock washer through the tab and frame into the nut. 5. Insert the straight tab handle nuts through the opening in the ends of the crossmember, aligning with the outer mounting tabs, and hand-start a 1/2" bolt with lock washer through the tab and frame into the nut. 6. When all bolts align, tighten securely. 7. Replace the bumper and trim assembly. 8. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to their instructions.
Yes. Locktite Blue must be applied to all bolts. The manual specifies using Locktite on all bolts before tightening.
The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical trucks can be considerable. If a bolt does not clear, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow the bolt to pass through. This is a normal part of the installation process for some vehicles.
The bent tab handle nuts (61-3269, qty. 2) are inserted through the holes in the front crossmember, inboard of each inner mounting tab. The straight tab handle nuts (61-3268, qty. 2) are inserted through the opening in the ends of the crossmember, aligning with the outer mounting tabs. Both types are used to secure the front mounting tabs of the baseplate to the truck frame using 1/2" bolts and lock washers.
Do not substitute other devices if the pin and clip are lost. Contact the manufacturer or your installer for replacement parts. Using substitute devices may compromise the safety of the towing system.
