They are designed to be mounted on a variety of trailers and are especially useful for boat trailers. CURT boat winches can also serve a number other winch applications, though they are not designed for vehicle towing. This CURT hand winch or boat winch features a capacity of 900 lbs. with a gear ratio of 3.25:1. It has a hub diameter of 3/4" and a handle length of 6-1/2". It also comes with a 15' winch strap and zinc-plated snap hook.

Yes, the hand winch can be used to load a boat onto a trailer, but only with proper precautions. When loading a boat onto a trailer without keel or side hull rollers, the trailer must be submerged in water when the boat is loaded by the winch. Attempting to drag the boat onto the trailer while on land can cause winch failure and possibly personal injury and property damage.
To secure the winch to the mounting location, you will need three grade 5, 3/8" diameter bolts, three lock washers, six flat washers, and three nuts. The handle must be secured to the input shaft with the provided lock nut before operation. If using the strap (included with model 29433), you will need the provided strap bolt and nut to secure the strap through its sewn loop.

1. Insert the steel cable through the square hole from the inside to the outside. 2. Insert the cable through the second hole from the outside to the inside. 3. Insert the cable through the square hole from the inside to the outside again. 4. Pull the cable tight. 5. Wrap the cable onto the drum.
To secure the winch strap, place the provided strap bolt through the sewn loop in the winch strap and secure it with the strap bolt nut. The installed winch strap should be rated at 1.5 times the winch's rated capacity (1,350 lbs for the 900 lb winch). The hook on the strap should be rated at 1.5 times the strap's rated capacity.
Place a lock washer, then a flat washer on each of the three grade 5, 3/8" bolts. Place each bolt through a mounting hole on the winch. Add one more flat washer to each bolt and secure with a nut. Ensure the winch base is properly bolted to a structure or vehicle that can hold both the winch and the winch load. Failure to properly bolt down the winch can result in personal injury and/or property damage.
Prior to operating the winch, secure the handle to the input shaft with the provided lock nut. Verify the handle is properly secured to the winch input shaft before use.
Wear impact safety glasses and heavy duty work gloves. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry that can be caught in moving parts. Wear protective hair covering to prevent long hair from becoming caught. If wearing a long sleeve shirt, roll the sleeves up to the elbows. Stand back and stay out of the direct line that the winch cable is pulling—if the cable slips or breaks, it will whiplash along this line. Do not overreach the winch. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Keep the work area clean and dry. Keep children away from the work area.
Always leave at least five wraps of cable or belt on the drum. Failure to do so may break the cable connection to the drum and could result in serious injury. Additionally, the cable under a load should only be wound onto the drum so that a minimum space of two times the cable diameter remains on the drum flange to avoid sideways cable slip and winch overloading.

If you do not hear a loud clicking noise when winding the strap in, the ratchet is not securing the load. Do not let go of the handle until the load has been secured. Check that the ratchet lever is properly engaged in the pinion gear. If the problem persists, do not operate the winch and contact Curt Manufacturing at 1.877.287.8634.
You may have released the handle before engaging the ratchet lever. Never let go of the handle prior to engaging the ratchet lever as this may cause the handle to spin dangerously. To let strap out: firmly hold the winch handle, release the ratchet lever (the handle may need to be rotated slightly to move it), carefully rotate the handle to let line out, and do not let go of the handle until the ratchet lever has been properly engaged and is supporting the load.
