The advantage of a hitch-mounted cargo carrier is that it can be mounted on the rear or front end of the vehicle as long as the vehicle is properly equipped with the right receiver hitch. Mounting a cargo carrier in the front opens up the rear receiver hitch for towing a trailer or adding a second carrier or bike rack if needed. The 18145 comes with a 1-1/4" shank. To adapt it to a 2" receiver tube, you must assemble the 2" adapter (#19) onto the 1-1/4" shank and secure it with the 1/2" hex head bolt, flat washer, lock washer and clip.
The maximum weight capacity is 500 lbs. when using the 2" receiver tube. Do not exceed this capacity, and distribute the weight evenly on the platform when hauling a load.
You will need a 19mm wrench and an adjustable wrench.
M6 bolts and M10 bolts are torqued to 16 ft-lbs. The manual does not specify a separate torque value for M8 bolts, so use 16 ft-lbs unless otherwise noted. During assembly, bolts are tightened to 80% tightness until Step 5, when all bolts and locknuts are fully tightened.

The CURT 18145 is a cargo carrier designed to attach to a vehicle's receiver tube for hauling cargo. It features a platform frame with support brackets and can accommodate loads up to 500 lbs. The carrier comes with a 1-1/4" shank and can be adapted to a 2" receiver tube using the included adapter.
The 18145 is designed to fit vehicle receiver tubes. It comes with a 1-1/4" shank for 1-1/4" receiver tubes. If your vehicle has a 2" receiver tube, you can use the included 2" adapter. Consult your vehicle's documentation or a fitment database to confirm your receiver tube size before purchasing.
The installation is rated as "Easy" based on time and effort involved. However, installation difficulty may vary depending on your level of expertise, the condition of your vehicle, and whether you have proper tools and equipment. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and using proper tools to improve installation quality and reduce time required.
Follow these steps in order: (1) Lay down the bottom platforms and mount three support brackets on each platform half with M6 bolts to 80% tightness. (2) Align the holes on assembled platforms with the 1-1/4" shank and secure with M10 bolts to 80% tightness. (3) Mount the connection tube brackets to the bottom platforms with M8 bolts to 80% tightness. (4) Insert the top platform tubing into the connection tube brackets and secure to the support brackets with M6 bolts to 80% tightness. (5) Secure the top platform tubing to the connection tube brackets with M8 bolts and fully tighten all bolts. (6) Insert the shank into the vehicle's receiver tube and secure with the 1/2" hex head bolt, flat washer, lock washer and clip.
During assembly steps 1–4, bolts are tightened to 80% tightness, meaning they are snug but not fully torqued. In Step 5, after the top platform tubing is secured to the connection tube brackets, all bolts and locknuts are fully tightened to their final torque specification of 16 ft-lbs.
The connection tube bracket with reflective tape should be located on the side facing away from the vehicle. The connection tube bracket without tape should be located on the shank side (the side facing the vehicle).
When laying down the bottom platforms in Step 1, the tube of the platform frame must be flush (level and even) with the top of the plate. This ensures correct alignment and assembly of the carrier. Refer to the assembly diagram on page 2 for a visual reference.
M6 bolts are torqued to 16 ft-lbs. M10 bolts are torqued to 16 ft-lbs. The manual does not specify a separate torque value for M8 bolts, so use 16 ft-lbs unless otherwise noted. All bolts are tightened to 80% tightness during assembly steps 1–4, then fully tightened in Step 5.
Three support brackets (#3) are mounted on each platform half (#4), for a total of six support brackets. Each is secured with an M6 x 35mm hex head bolt, M6 flat washer and M6 locknut.
Insert the cargo carrier shank into the vehicle's receiver tube. Secure it with a 1/2" hex head bolt (#16), flat washer (#17), lock washer (#18) and clip (#15). The lock washer and clip prevent the bolt from loosening during use.
Assemble the 2" adapter (#19) onto the 1-1/4" shank (#8). Align the holes on the adapter and shank, then secure with a 1/2" hex head bolt (#16), flat washer (#17), lock washer (#18) and clip (#15).
Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Do not exceed the capacity of your lowest rated towing component. Do not exceed the maximum weight capacity of 500 lbs. when using the 2" receiver tube. Distribute the weight evenly on the platform when hauling a load. The manual warns not to block brake lights or turn signals. Ensure the carrier is positioned so that your vehicle's brake lights and turn signals remain visible to other drivers.

After installation, perform a periodic inspection to ensure all hardware and components remain secure. Check that all bolts and locknuts are fully tightened to 16 ft-lbs and that the carrier is properly seated in the receiver tube. Verify that the carrier does not block brake lights or turn signals.
