The CURT 70131 is a tow bar base plate system designed for dinghy towing. It consists of driver and passenger side base plates that mount into the vehicle's frame rails through the factory tow hook opening. The system includes mounting tabs, spacers, safety cables, and all required fasteners. The installed attachment tabs measure 19" in height and 33-1/2" in width.
The CURT 70131 is designed for vehicles with frame rails and factory tow hook openings. The manual does not specify which vehicle makes, models, or years are compatible. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 or visit curtmfg.com to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle.
The CURT 70131 can be installed on Denali models, but trimming may be required on the inside of the tow hook opening on the metal trim for clearance. This is noted as a potential modification during installation.
You will need: torque wrench, 3/4" wrench, 7/16" socket, 18mm wrench, 3/4" socket, drill, 18mm socket, and 1/2" drill bit. Safety glasses should be worn at all times during installation.
The kit includes: 2 tow bar base plates (driver and passenger), 2 tow bar mounting tabs, 2 large spacers, 2 round spacers, 2 safety cables rated for 7,500 lbs each, 4 carriage bolts (1/2"-13 x 1-1/2", grade 8), 2 hex bolts (1/2"-13 x 5", grade 8), 6 serrated-flange nuts (1/2"-13, grade 8), 2 conical-toothed lock washers (1/2"), 4 fishwires (1/2"), 2 socket plugs, and 2 quick links (1/2").
Yes. The first step is to remove the two bolts from the tow hook using an 18mm socket and wrench, then remove the tow hooks from the vehicle and return them to the vehicle owner.
The installation is rated as Easy. However, installation difficulty levels are based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on the installer's level of expertise, the condition of the vehicle, and having proper tools and equipment available.
Secure the carriage bolts (#7) to the fishwires (#11) and thread them through the rectangular holes in the base plate weldments so the bolts are inside the tube. Then thread the fishwires through the corresponding holes in the bottom of the frame rail. This allows you to pull the carriage bolts into position as you slide the baseplate into the frame rail.
1. Remove factory tow hooks. 2. Secure carriage bolts to fishwires and thread through base plate holes and frame rail holes. 3. Slide base plates into frame rails through the tow hook opening, pulling carriage bolts into position. Slide round spacer into large frame hole and large spacer over both bolts. Loosely install flange nuts. 4. Insert hex bolts with conical lock washers into side frame holes and install serrated flange nuts on the outside. 5. Install permanent safety cables and quick links around the vehicle frame.
Leave the flange nuts loosely installed during Step 3. Do not fully tighten them until after the hex bolts and conical lock washers are installed in Step 4. All 1/2" fasteners are then torqued to 110 lb-ft in Step 4.
The manual lists a drill and 1/2" drill bit in the tools required, but does not explicitly state where or whether drilling is necessary. The installation uses existing frame rail holes and the factory tow hook opening. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 for clarification on whether drilling is required for your specific vehicle.
Yes. On Denali models, trimming may be required on the inside of the tow hook opening on the metal trim for clearance. This is noted as a potential modification during Step 1.
All 1/2" fasteners (carriage bolts, hex bolts, and serrated-flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightening.
The installed attachment tabs measure 19" in height and 33-1/2" in width.
Each safety cable is rated for 7,500 lbs. Two cables are included in the kit, and both must be installed. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). This is a critical safety requirement when towing with the CURT 70131.
Yes. When dinghy towing a vehicle with a tow bar, base plate safety cables should be used at all times. In the event of a disconnect, the safety cables are designed to help prevent complete vehicle separation. The CURT 70131 includes two permanent safety cables rated for 7,500 lbs each. However, base plate safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
The cables must be connected to the base plate and the vehicle frame. Make sure the cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring or other components. Two cables must be installed, one on each side of the vehicle. Use the illustrations in the manual as a guide for proper routing.
When not towing, insert the socket plugs (#12) into the ends of the tow bar base plates (#1, #2). The manual also recommends removing the base plate attachment tabs when not in use to help prevent damage to the product or vehicle.
Periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts. Review your towing vehicle and trailer manufacturer's recommendations for specific capacities and requirements.
