The CURT 70152 is a baseplate weldment assembly designed for towing. It serves as the mounting point for a tow bar when dinghy towing a vehicle. The baseplate is permanently mounted to the vehicle frame and includes attachment tabs measuring 18-1/4" in height and 22" in width. It is rated for use with 7500 lb safety cables.
Installation is rated as Difficult. The installation requires removal of the bumper fascia, bumper, skid shield, fenders, and wheel well; trimming and drilling of the frame and plastic shroud; and fishwiring to route fasteners through the frame. Installation difficulty may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and availability of proper tools and equipment.
Required tools include: flat screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, drill, reciprocating saw, hole saw (1-1/4"), drill bit (1/2"), torque wrench, ratchets (1/2" and 3/8"), Torx bit (T-40), sockets (3/4", 8mm, 10mm, 16mm, 17mm), utility knife, grinder, large vise grips, trim removal tools, tape measure, and Loctite RED.
The kit includes: 1 baseplate weldment assembly, 2 side plate spacers, 1 electrical flat bracket, 2 base plate T-bolt pin assemblies (long), 8 carriage bolts (1/2-13 UNC, 1-1/2", Grade 8), 2 HHCS bolts (M10x1.5, 50mm, Class 10.9), 2 self-drilling screws (12-14, 1"), 8 serrated flange nuts (1/2-13 UNC, Grade 8), 2 conical tooth washers (3/8"), 8 square hole spacers (0.250 x 1.00 x 2.00"), 8 fishwires (1/2" x 20"), 2 caplugs (DOP-1375), 2 quick links (0.500"), and 2 safety cables (7500 lb rated). Two 10mm x 35mm flange bolts are existing vehicle fasteners that are reused.
Yes. The bumper must be permanently removed. Using a 16mm socket, remove the two bolts from the bumper and using a 10mm socket remove the one nut on each side of the vehicle. As the bumper is removed, also remove two push pins from the shroud piece around the bumper and remove the shroud piece. The bumper will not be reinstalled.
Fishwiring is a technique used to guide fasteners through the vehicle frame rail without losing them inside the frame. The coiled end of the fishwire tool is inserted through the hitch mounting hole in the vehicle frame rail and out the access hole. The coiled end is passed through a spacer and the bolt is threaded into the coil. The wire is kinked to keep the spacer separate from the bolt. The fishwire is then pulled to draw the spacer and bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole. This prevents loss of bolts or spacers inside the frame rail during installation.
Yes. Using a reciprocating saw, trim the frame as shown in Step 15, creating a mark on the frame that is 3" down from the center of the top bolt hole and centered horizontally from the center of the top bolt hole. Additional trimming may be required; trim as needed for fitment. Perform this process on both sides of the vehicle. You will also need to trim the plastic shroud using a reciprocating saw as shown in Step 17.
Two hole sizes are required: (1) A 1-1/4" hole is drilled using a hole saw. Create a mark on the frame that is 3" down from the center of the top bolt hole and centered horizontally from the center of the top bolt hole, then drill the new hole. Perform this on both sides of the vehicle. (2) Four 1/2" holes are drilled on the side of the frame using the base plate as a template. Perform this on both sides of the vehicle.
Three torque values apply: (1) The existing 10mm x 35mm top bolt: 45 ft-lb with Loctite RED (Step 18). (2) The 10mm x 1.5", 50mm bottom bolt with 3/8" conical tooth washer: 45 ft-lb with Loctite RED (Step 19). (3) All eight carriage bolts (four on each side) with serrated nuts: 110 ft-lb (Step 23). All bolts requiring Loctite RED must use Loctite RED during installation.
Yes. During fascia removal, unplug one electrical connection on the passenger side of the vehicle (Step 10) and one electrical connection on the driver side of the vehicle (Step 11). If present, disconnect washer fluid lines going to the front of the fascia. The number of plugs and lines to disconnect will vary depending on the trim level of the vehicle. When reinstalling the fascia, ensure all electrical connectors are reconnected properly.
The manual does not specify a towing capacity for the baseplate itself. However, the included safety cables are rated for 7500 lb. The manual states: Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Review your vehicle's owner's manual and the towed vehicle's owner's manual for specific towing recommendations, capacities and requirements.
Two 7500 lb safety cables must be installed. Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided hole on the baseplate using the provided 0.500" quick links. Install the cables to the frame of the vehicle, ensuring the cable is secured around a solid piece of frame and is not rubbing on any hoses, wires, or moving parts. Additional options may interfere with the suggested mounting locations. Safety cables must be connected to both the base plate and the vehicle frame. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle. Base plate safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
On 2023 and newer Jeep Grand Cherokee models, fascia removal and reinstallation during baseplate installation may cause the radar system to malfunction. This can trigger the AEB (Automatic Electronic Braking) and ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) sensors to malfunction. To address this issue, CURT recommends having the system recalibrated by a certified Jeep dealership after installation is complete.
Periodic inspection of the trailer hitch should be performed to ensure all mounting hardware remains tight and structural components are secure. Periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts. Review your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations in the owner's manual for specific maintenance and towing requirements.
The removal sequence is: (1) Remove ten push pins and fascia cover (Step 1). (2) Remove six bolts from top of grille using T-40 torx (Step 2). (3) Remove one bolt from top of grille on each side using 10mm socket (Step 3). (4) Remove five bolts from wheel well edge on each side using 8mm socket (Step 4). (5) Pull back wheel well liner and remove one bolt from fascia joint on each side using 10mm socket (Step 5). (6) Remove five bolts from belly pan using 8mm socket (Step 6). (7) Remove one bolt from underside of fascia in front of tire on each side using 8mm socket (Step 7). (8) Remove two bolts from belly pan using 10mm socket (Step 8). (9) Remove two bolts from underside of fascia and two push pins (Step 9). (10) Unplug electrical connections and disconnect washer fluid lines (Steps 10-11). (11) Pull fenders outward (Step 12). (12) Release fascia clips and remove fascia (Step 13). (13) Remove bumper (Step 14).
The baseplate is positioned and secured in stages: (1) Hold the base plate into place on the vehicle frame and start the existing 10mm x 35mm bolt in the top hole on each side, using Loctite RED and torquing to 45 ft-lb (Step 18). (2) Install a 10mm x 1.5", 50mm bolt with a 3/8" conical tooth washer into the bottom hole on each side, using Loctite RED and torquing to 45 ft-lb (Step 19). (3) Using the base plate as a template, drill four 1/2" holes on the side of the frame on each side (Step 20). (4) Using fishwire, install 1/2" x 1-1/2" carriage bolts with spacers and Loctite RED in the bottom front hole and start serrated nuts, leaving loose (Step 21). (5) Insert spacer plates at the top of the base plate between frame and base plate with slotted end facing downward, then install carriage bolts and nuts using fishwire (Step 22). (6) Install two more carriage bolts with spacers and nuts in the top and bottom holes using fishwire (Step 23). (7) Torque all eight carriage bolts (four on each side) to 110 ft-lb (Step 23).
After the baseplate is mounted and safety cables are installed, reinstall the fascia, fascia cover, wheel well liner, fender trim, and belly pan. Hold the fascia as close to its original position as possible and mark and trim the fascia around the electrical mounting rods, convenience links, attachment tabs and electrical mounting rods as needed for fitment. Ensure all electrical connectors are reconnected properly and any other connectors or lines depending on vehicle trim are reconnected. On 2023 and newer Jeep Grand Cherokee models, have the radar system recalibrated by a certified Jeep dealership.

In Step 18, the manual notes: Ensure all holes line up before tightening bolts. If holes do not line up, do not force the baseplate. Verify that the baseplate is positioned correctly on the frame and that all previous removal steps were completed properly. Additional trimming of the frame or plastic shroud may be required (as noted in Steps 15 and 17: trim as needed for fitment). Reposition the baseplate and verify alignment before proceeding with bolt installation.
Fascia removal and reinstallation during baseplate installation may cause the radar system to malfunction, triggering AEB (Automatic Electronic Braking) and ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) sensor issues on 2023 and newer Jeep Grand Cherokee models. To address this, CURT recommends having the system recalibrated by a certified Jeep dealership. Do not operate the vehicle with malfunctioning safety systems.

The coiled end of the fishwire is passed through the spacer and the bolt is threaded into the coil. The wire is kinked to keep the spacer separate from the bolt. The fishwire is then pulled to draw the spacer and bolt through the frame and out the mounting hole. If a fastener is lost despite using the fishwire technique, the frame rail may need to be accessed from another point or the vehicle may require professional service to retrieve the lost component.
In Step 25, hold the fascia as close to its original position as possible and mark and trim the fascia around the electrical mounting rods, convenience links, attachment tabs and electrical mounting rods as needed for fitment. Use a utility knife to carefully trim the fascia. If significant trimming is required, verify that the baseplate is positioned correctly and that all frame trimming (Steps 15-17) was completed as specified. Additional trimming of the frame or plastic shroud may be required beyond what is shown in the manual.
