This custom tow bar base plate fits select years of the Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee (see application info to verify fitment). It features an OE style design to fully integrate with the front of the vehicle and maintain a factory look. This Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee tow bar baseplate is constructed from high-quality steel and is precisely welded for a perfect fit. It is physically tested for absolute safety and peace of mind while dinghy towing. The CURT 70101 is designed for 2011-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2014+ Jeep Grand Cherokee models. If your vehicle is a different model year or make, this product may not be compatible. Verify your vehicle's year and model against these specifications before purchasing.
The 70101 can be installed on vehicles with tow hooks, but the tow hooks must be permanently removed and not reinstalled. The tow hook brackets are also removed. The tow hooks and hardware are returned to the vehicle owner. If you wish to retain your tow hooks, this product is not suitable.
The kit includes two tow bar base plates (passenger and driver), four conduit spacers (short and long), support plates, mounting tabs, safety cables rated for 7,500 lbs, quick links, socket plugs, and all required fasteners: carriage bolts, hex bolts, flange nuts, nylock nuts, conical washers, flat washers, and nylon rivets. Four fishwires are also included for routing bolts through the base plate tubes.
Required tools are: torque wrench, drill, 1/4" and 3/8" drill bits, sockets (8mm, 9/16", 10mm, 16mm, 30mm), wrenches (9/16" and 30mm), plastic pop rivet gun, large vise grip, flat screwdriver, utility knife, and tape measure. Four 3/8" fishwires are included.
Yes. The front fascia panels and windshield washer reservoir must be temporarily removed during installation and then reinstalled. The removal process differs depending on whether your vehicle is a 2011-2013 model or 2014+. For 2011-2013 Durango and Grand Cherokee, you remove retainer pins from the underside of the fascia, wheel well liner components, and then unclip the bumper cover. For 2014+ Grand Cherokee, additional steps include removing upper fascia retainer pins and headlight sprayers if equipped.
Yes. When you remove the windshield washer reservoir, have a clean container ready to catch the washer fluid. The fluid should be set aside and refilled after installation is complete.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill two 3/8" holes in the upper pinch flange seam of the vehicle frame using the top holes of the support plate as a guide. This is done in Step 20 during the installation of models without tow hooks. Additionally, trimming of the fascia is required to make space for the safety cable loops and attachment tabs.
Yes. After the base plate is installed, you must hold up the fascia in its original position and mark where it needs to be trimmed to make space for the safety cable loops and attachment tabs. Trim off the marked area, then reinstall the fascia. For Summit and High Altitude models without tow hook pockets, trim a smaller area initially, do a test fit, and trim again as needed.
Torque specifications depend on the vehicle configuration. For vehicles with tow hooks, torque all hardware to 45 lb-ft. For vehicles without tow hooks, torque the M10 x 80mm and 3/8" x 4-1/2" hex bolts to 37 lb-ft, the carriage bolts and support plate bolts to 37 lb-ft, and the upper pinch flange bolts to 37 lb-ft.
The manual does not specify whether battery disconnection is required. However, if your vehicle is equipped with fog lights or headlight sprayers, these must be unplugged before removing the fascia and bumper components to prevent damage.
Yes. Safety cables must be used at all times when dinghy towing a vehicle with the tow bar. The 70101 includes two permanent safety cables rated for 7,500 lbs each, connected via quick links to the base plates and vehicle frame. In the event of a disconnect, the safety cables are designed to help prevent complete vehicle separation. These cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
Each of the two permanent safety cables included with the 70101 is rated for 7,500 lbs. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. Take care when cutting any plastic or metal, as injury may occur if done improperly. Watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses during installation; if the base plate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).
After installation, verify that the compressor (if equipped) clears the tow bar base plate and will not vibrate against it. Ensure the fascia is properly reinstalled and that the safety cable loops and attachment tabs fit correctly. Periodically check the condition of all towing equipment, ensure all fasteners are tight, and verify that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts.
The installed attachment tabs have a height of 17-1/2" and a width of 34-3/4".
The socket plugs should be inserted into the ends of the tow bar base plates when not towing. When ready to tow, install the tow bar mounting tabs instead.
On the passenger side, if your vehicle is equipped with a compressor, it must be temporarily removed. There are two nuts attaching the compressor to the bumper and one attaching it to the vehicle's frame. Support the compressor while it is temporarily removed, then reinstall it after the base plate is in place, ensuring it clears the base plate and will not vibrate against it.
On vehicles with tow hooks, the tow hooks and brackets must be permanently removed. The base plate is secured with M10 x 80mm hex bolts (torque 45 lb-ft) and M10 x 100mm hex bolts through short conduit spacers. On vehicles without tow hooks, fascia tow hook opening covers are removed, and the base plate is secured with M10 x 80mm hex bolts and 3/8" x 4-1/2" hex bolts through long conduit spacers (torque 37 lb-ft). The torque specifications and hardware differ between the two configurations.
Yes. The fascia removal process differs significantly. For 2011-2013 Durango and Grand Cherokee, you remove retainer pins from the underside of the fascia, plastic rivets from the wheel well liner, and then unclip the bumper cover. For 2014+ Grand Cherokee, you remove upper fascia retainer pins, retainer knobs on the underside, and may need to disconnect headlight sprayers. On Summit and High Altitude 2014+ models, corner clips must be released by pushing inward first, then pulling down and out.
