It comes with a three-position coupling indicator visible from your pickup truck cab, an extra wide head for easier coupling and high-strength interlocking die-cast jaws for a secure hold on your 5th wheel trailer. The CURT A16 (part number 16120) is a 5th wheel hitch designed for pickup trucks with bed-mounted base rails. It has been engineered and tested at a rating of 16,000 lbs GTW (Gross Trailer Weight). The hitch features spring-loaded jaws that automatically lock around the trailer kingpin, and is adjustable in height from 13" to 17" from the pickup bed to the top of its skid plate to accommodate different trailer ride heights.
The A16 is designed for pickup trucks equipped with bed-mounted base rails. The manual does not specify year, make or model compatibility. If installing to new bed mounting rails, follow the rail manufacturer's instructions for proper placement, alignment and spacing per your vehicle's year, make and model. Yes. The A16 can be mounted to existing bed mounting rails. However, the rails must be properly installed and parallel with each other—check that diagonal dimensions are the same. If alignment issues arise when fitting the A16 into existing rails, you may need to loosen the mounting rail bolts and realign the rails to facilitate installation. It is recommended to replace old lock washers with new ones at this time. Torque mounting rail bolts to the rail manufacturer's specifications.
The A16 is adjustable from 13" to 17" from the pickup bed to the top of its skid plate. To calculate the required height: (1) With the trailer on a firm, level surface with wheel chocks front and behind, extend front trailer lifting jacks and adjust to set the trailer at or near level. (2) Measure from the ground to under the trailer's kingpin box skid plate. (3) Measure from the ground to the surface of the pickup bed. (4) Subtract the measurement from step 2 from step 3—this value is your height requirement. Ideally the trailer should ride as near to level as possible, with minimum 5 1/2" clearance between the pickup bed rails and the trailer.
The A16 includes: 2 leg weldments (one with instruction label on driver side); 1 handle assembly; 1 handle lock bar; 2 button head cap screws M8 1.25" x 30; 2 Nylock nuts M8 1 1/4"; 1 latch spring; 1 safety latch pin 3/8"; 4 pilot hex bolts M14; 4 lock washers 14mm; 4 flat washers 14mm; 4 base rail mounting clips; and 4 base rail mounting pins 1/2" diameter. The head assembly is partially pre-assembled, inspected and tested.
Assembly occurs in this order: (1) Attach the leg weldments to the mid-section using the supplied pilot hex bolts (M14), lock washers (14mm) and flat washers (14mm), selecting the appropriate holes to achieve proper ride height. (2) Mount the assembly to the base rails by aligning the four tabs on the bottom of the legs with the corresponding slots in the truck's mounting rails, then secure with the four 1/2" rail mount pins and clips. (3) Assemble the handle by sliding it over the handle mount bar, inserting the latch spring, positioning both M8 bolts and lock washers, sliding the latch plate into position, and securing with the M8 bolts. (4) Insert the safety latch pin through the handle. The head assembly can be removed from the mid-section to aid installation of pilot bolts.
The four 14mm pilot hex bolts that attach the legs to the mid-section must be torqued to 100 foot lbs. These bolts must be re-torqued after the initial 500 miles and every 1,000 miles thereafter, and prior to each individual use. This is a critical maintenance item for safe operation.
The two 16mm head pivot bolts must be torqued to 200 +/- 25 foot lbs prior to each use and every 1,000 miles thereafter.
Yes, but the manual notes that the head assembly can easily be removed from the mid-section to further aid installation of the pilot bolts. You may also find it easier to position the A16 assembly and lower it into the rails with the center head section removed to reduce weight. Removal is optional and depends on your preference and available assistance.
Follow these steps: (1) Slide the handle assembly over the end of the handle mount bar on the A16 head. (2) Insert the latch spring into the slot on the handle mount bar and continue sliding the handle assembly into place. (3) Position the handle assembly so the first M8 bolt and lock washer can be dropped into position behind the latch spring. (4) With the first M8 bolt in place, pull the handle assembly back out until the second M8 bolt and lock washer can be dropped into position. (5) Slide the latch plate into position and secure by threading the M8 bolts into the tapped holes, alternating between the two bolts while tightening. Pulling out on the handle while tightening will ease installation. (6) Confirm the lock bar latches into position and insert the safety latch pin. Do not over-tighten the M8 bolts—the handle assembly must slide freely over the handle mount bar to latch properly.
Never position yourself or others under the trailer's kingpin area during coupling and uncoupling. If you must position any part of your body under the trailer, between the truck and trailer, or between the trailer's kingpin and 5th wheel hitch, you must: (1) Block all trailer tires in front and behind with appropriate wheel chocks—do not substitute stones, wood blocks, etc. (2) Ensure front trailer lifting jacks are supporting the trailer and resting on a firm and level surface. (3) Set the towing vehicle to park (automatic) or neutral (manual), apply the emergency brake, and turn off the engine. These precautions prevent serious injury or death from trailer separation or movement.
Before coupling: (1) Perform the connection on a firm and level surface with multiple wheel chocks in front of and behind trailer tires—do not substitute stones or wood blocks. (2) Open or remove the tailgate as required to safely back the tow vehicle under the trailer. (3) Center the trailer kingpin with the opening on the hitch head, but do not engage the kingpin into the 5th wheel at this time. (4) Stop the tow vehicle when the trailer's skid plate is approximately 4" from the 5th wheel's skid plate. (5) Set automatic transmissions to park and activate the emergency brake; set manual transmissions to neutral and activate the emergency brake. (6) Adjust the front trailer lifting jacks so the trailer's kingpin skid plate is approximately 1/2" below the top surface of the 5th wheel's skid plate lead-in ramp. (7) Check that the jaws are open and the yellow indicator is visible, indicating the A16 is ready to couple.
If the green indicator is visible and the jaws are closed and locked: (1) Remove the safety latch pin from the 5th wheel's handle. (2) Open the jaws by pulling the handle out about 1/2" and then swinging it back toward the front of the tow vehicle. (3) The handle will latch in the unlocked position and the yellow indicator will be visible from the tow vehicle cab. If the handle will not latch in the unlocked position or the red indicator is visible, refer to the troubleshooting section before attempting to couple.
If using a lube plate on the trailer's kingpin, a single 3/16" thick lube plate may be used. If not using a lube plate, apply a high-pressure wheel bearing grease to the 5th wheel skid plate. Operating without a lube plate or grease will result in accelerated wear and/or damage to the 5th wheel's skid plate.
Back up the towing vehicle while remaining centered and aligned to the trailer's kingpin. The trailer's kingpin skid plate will compress the towing vehicle's suspension and ramp up onto the 5th wheel skid plate. Observe the following: (1) Trailer kingpin fully seats into opening on the 5th wheel head. (2) Yellow indicator will change to green indicator (when viewing from cab). (3) Operating handle will swing rearward toward the trailer to the locked position. After coupling, visually confirm the trailer's skid plate is resting completely on the head of the 5th wheel and the jaws are locked around the trailer's kingpin. Insert the safety pin through the locking handle to ensure it cannot be unlocked while towing. Never tow without visually ensuring the kingpin is properly coupled and the safety pin is installed.
After coupling and prior to removing trailer wheel blocks or raising front trailer jacks, perform the pull test: (1) Set the towing vehicle in a forward gear and lightly tug on the trailer to ensure 100% coupling has taken place. (2) If resistance is felt, release forward pressure, set the vehicle to park (automatic) or neutral (manual), and activate the emergency brake. (3) If resistance is not felt, the trailer may not be coupled correctly. Do not continue applying forward pressure. Immediately stop and back the towing vehicle into its original position. Do not allow the truck and trailer to separate, as separation can cause damage to the towing vehicle, 5th wheel hitch and/or trailer, and may result in serious injury or death. Review coupling instructions, apply corrective action and repeat coupling steps.
If the kingpin is resting on top of the jaws instead of properly seated in them: (1) Immediately lower the trailer jacks to lift the kingpin off the jaws. (2) Inspect the 5th wheel for damage that may have resulted from the improper coupling attempt. (3) Under no circumstances should the 5th wheel unit be used if damage exists. (4) If no damage exists, review the coupling instructions and repeat the procedure. A gap between the skid plates may indicate the kingpin is not engaged into the jaws properly or has high-sided and is resting on top of the jaw.
After the pull test confirms proper coupling, follow these steps: (1) Confirm the handle safety latch pin has been installed. (2) Attach electrical harnesses. (3) Attach lanyard and insert electric brake break-away plunger. If hydraulic surge brakes are present, attach lanyard from the surge brake assembly as required. (4) Fully retract front trailer lifting jacks. (5) Close truck tailgate or reinstall tailgate as required. (6) Remove tire chock blocks. (7) Check running lights, directional signals and brake lights for proper operation. (8) Pull forward a few feet and apply brakes to check that trailer brakes are activating. Adjust the electric brake controller if necessary.
Follow these steps: (1) Remove the safety latch pin from the handle of the 5th wheel. (2) Unlock the jaws by pulling the locking handle out about 1/2" and then swinging it forward until it latches in the unlocked position. The red unlocked indicator will be visible from the cab. (3) Remove the parking brake and slowly drive the tow vehicle out from under the trailer. If resistance is encountered, determine the corrective action and repeat uncoupling steps. (4) As the kingpin moves out of the 5th wheel jaws, the handle will drop back slightly to the couple position and the indicator will change from red to yellow. The 5th wheel is now safely uncoupled and ready to be recoupled the next time you tow. If the operating handle fails to latch in the unlock position while the kingpin is in the jaws, refer to the troubleshooting section.
After uncoupling, the A16 automatically resets. As the kingpin moves out of the 5th wheel jaws, the handle drops back to the couple position and the indicator changes from red to yellow. The 5th wheel is now safely uncoupled and ready to be recoupled the next time you tow. No additional reset steps are required.
The A16 requires regular maintenance before each use and every 1,000 miles: (1) Lubricate the skid plate with high-pressure wheel bearing grease or use a lube plate. (2) Remove the center pivot pin, apply light grease, and replace it with the safety latch pin. (3) Torque the four 14mm leg pilot bolts to 100 foot lbs (re-torque after initial 500 miles). (4) Torque the two 16mm head pivot bolts to 200 +/- 25 foot lbs. (5) Open jaws and apply grease to the curved surface of the locking pawl. (6) Use a grease gun to apply grease to both zerks on the front of each jaw (jaws must be closed and locked). (7) Spray rust inhibitor or lubricant on the lock handle, linkage bar and pawl pivot points. (8) After each use and before long-term storage, clean the A16 with warm soapy water and dry with towels or compressed air. Spray exposed surfaces with rust inhibitor before long-term storage. It is recommended to remove the 5th wheel from the vehicle or cover it when not in use for extended periods.
The center pivot pin should be lubricated before each use. Remove the center pivot pin and apply a light coating of high-pressure wheel bearing grease. Replace the pin and ensure it is secured with the safety latch pin.
The jaw pivot points should be lubricated before each use. Use a grease gun to apply grease to both zerks located on the front of each jaw. The jaws must be in the closed and locked position for the zerks to be accessible.
The A16 can be removed in two ways. Option 1 (complete removal): (1) Remove the four clips and mounting rail pins. (2) Remove the 5th wheel unit from the mounting rails. Option 2 (disassembled removal): (1) Remove the center latch pin and large pivot pin. (2) Lift and remove the head assembly and yoke. (3) Remove the rail clips and mounting pins. (4) Lift and remove the mid-section and leg assembly. To reinstall using Option 2: (1) Place the mid-section, still loosely attached to the legs, into the mounting rails. (2) Insert the four mounting rail pins and clips. (3) Re-torque the four pilot hex bolts to 100 foot lbs. If binding occurs during removal, loosen the four 14mm leg mounting bolts to free them from the rails.
The A16 has visual indicators and warning labels: (1) Yellow indicator (triangle) = couple position with jaws open and handle unlocked, ready to couple. (2) Green indicator (circle) = jaws closed and locked after coupling. (3) Red indicator (octagon) = jaws unlocked and handle in unlock position. The driver side leg has warning and instruction labels. The jaws are spring-loaded and open rapidly when the safety pin is removed and the handle is moved to the unlock position. Keep hands clear of the jaws at all times. Warning labels on the 5th wheel hitch mid-section must be observed.

A red indicator means the jaws are unlocked and the operating handle is latched in the unlock position. Do not tow in this configuration. The red indicator will remain visible if the jaws are unable to fully open and reset the operating handle to the yellow couple position. Follow these troubleshooting steps: (1) Visually check for damage to the locking mechanism. Ensure the jaws are open and the indicator, jaw, handle and torsion springs are all attached and undamaged. If any springs are missing or damaged, do not use the hitch until repaired. (2) Ensure the locking mechanism is free of excessive dirt, rust, grease, snow, ice or other foreign material. Clean with warm soapy water and lightly lubricate exposed surfaces with rust inhibitor. (3) If all components are undamaged and move freely, apply pressure to the operating handle as if unlocking and release. If the handle drops to the couple position and the indicator turns yellow, you are ready to couple. (4) If cycling the handle is unsuccessful, apply pressure to the front of the jaw to manually reset the locking pawl. (5) If none of these steps resolve the issue, contact CURT Technical Service.
The typical clearance between the pickup bed rails and the trailer should be a minimum of 5 1/2". This clearance is achieved by properly adjusting the height of the A16 5th wheel hitch, which is adjustable from 13" to 17" from the pickup bed to the top of its skid plate.
Creating a gap between the trailer skid plate and the 5th wheel skid plate is not necessary or recommended. If a gap is present, it should be minimal and no more than 1/16". Excessive gap while coupled can damage internal components of the 5th wheel hitch as well as components of your trailer.
If difficulty is experienced fitting the A16 into existing bed mounting rails: (1) Loosely assemble the legs to the A16 mid-section. (2) Place the unit on top of the existing bed mounting rails, aligning the foot tabs with the outermost rectangular slots of the mounting rails. (3) When the 5th wheel foot tabs drop into the four rectangular slots, pin the foot tabs using the four pins and clips provided. (4) Continue assembly by tightening the pilot hex bolts to 100 foot lbs. (5) If difficulty persists, it may be necessary to loosen the mounting rail bolts and realign the mounting rails to facilitate installation. It is recommended to replace old lock washers with new lock washers at this time. Torque mounting rail bolts to the rail manufacturer's specifications. Continue with the A16 installation by tightening the pilot bolts to 100 foot lbs.

If the trailer does not couple properly: (1) Verify the trailer height is correct. The trailer's kingpin skid plate should be approximately 1/2" below the top surface of the 5th wheel's skid plate lead-in ramp before coupling. (2) Ensure the jaws are open and the yellow indicator is visible before backing under the trailer. (3) Center the trailer kingpin with the opening on the hitch head. (4) Back up slowly and smoothly, remaining centered and aligned to the trailer's kingpin. (5) Confirm the trailer's skid plate is resting completely on the head of the 5th wheel and the jaws are locked around the kingpin. (6) If the kingpin is resting on top of the jaws instead of seated in them, immediately lower the trailer jacks to lift the kingpin off the jaws. Inspect the 5th wheel for damage. If no damage exists, review the coupling instructions and repeat the procedure.
If the pull test shows no resistance, the trailer may not be coupled correctly. Do not continue applying forward pressure. Immediately stop and back the towing vehicle into its original position. Do not allow the truck and trailer to separate, as separation can cause damage to the towing vehicle, 5th wheel hitch and/or trailer, and may result in serious injury or death. Review the coupling instructions, apply corrective action and repeat the coupling steps. Verify the trailer height, jaw position, kingpin seating and safety pin installation before attempting to couple again.
If resistance is encountered while uncoupling: (1) Ensure the safety latch pin has been removed from the handle. (2) Ensure the handle is pulled out about 1/2" and swung forward until it latches in the unlocked position. The red indicator should be visible. (3) If the operating handle fails to latch in the unlock position while the kingpin is in the jaws, refer to the troubleshooting steps in the Preparation Troubleshooting section: visually check for damage, clean the locking mechanism, cycle the handle, or apply pressure to the jaw to reset the locking pawl. (4) If difficulty persists, determine the corrective action and repeat uncoupling steps. (5) If the issue cannot be resolved, contact CURT Technical Service at 1-800-798-0813.
