The CURT A30 5th wheel hitch offers smoother, quieter towing for your home-away-from-home, combining the patented technology of our A-series, an easier mounting system and the power of a 30K 5th wheel hitch. Like our other A-series hitches, this 30K 5th wheel hitch uses a patented cast yoke to allow for unimpeded head movement, while providing exceptional stability for the trailer. The yoke has a set of poly-torsion inserts to suppress shock loads and reduce excessive noise, and the head features high-strength, interlocking jaws to give the trailer stability and the freedom to pivot and swivel as needed. The A30 5th wheel hitch is also engineered for easier installation. The legs are equipped with two pins to properly align with the mounting holes, and they have easy-access mounting bolts for ergonomic tightening. It is rated for a gross trailer weight of 30,000 lbs and a vertical load of 7,500 lbs. The hitch head height is adjustable from 13 to 17 inches to match your trailer's kingpin height.
Yes. The 16190 mounts to truck bed base rails. The base rails must be properly installed, parallel with each other, and aligned per the rail manufacturer's specifications for your vehicle's year, make and model. The diagonal dimensions of the base rails should be equal when measured from the same reference point.
The typical clearance between the truck bed rails and the trailer should be a minimum of 5 1/2 inches.
Follow these steps: (1) Place the trailer on a firm, level surface with chock blocks in front and behind the tires. Extend and adjust front trailer lifting jacks to set the trailer level. (2) Measure from the ground to the underside of the trailer's kingpin box skid plate (or lube plate if used). (3) Measure from the ground to the truck bed surface. (4) Subtract the kingpin measurement from the truck bed measurement. This value is your required hitch height. The 16190 is adjustable in 1.25-inch increments from 13 to 17 inches.
A ratchet, torque wrench, and socket set are required. The torque wrench is essential because fasteners must be tightened to specific values: M14 bolts to 100 ft-lbs, M8 bolts to 16 ft-lbs, and M16 bolts to 200±25 ft-lbs.
Assembly order is: (1) Attach the two leg weldments (#2, #3) to the main body/head assembly (#1) using M14 hex bolts, lock washers, flat washers, and nylock nuts, torqued to 100 ft-lbs. (2) Assemble the handle assembly to the head. (3) Mount the complete unit to the truck bed base rails using the four base rail mounting pins and clips. The manual notes that positioning the main body upside-down during leg attachment may be easier, and the head assembly can be removed to aid installation.
Attach the two leg weldments (#2, #3) to the main body/head assembly (#1) using the supplied hardware: four M14 hex bolts (#10), four M14 lock washers (#11), four M14 flat washers (#12), and four M14 nylock nuts (#13). Torque all four M14 hex bolts to 100 ft-lbs. Depending on which holes are required to achieve proper ride height, it may be easier to position the main body upside-down during attachment. The head assembly can be removed to further aid installation.
With the base rails correctly positioned and parallel, lower the 5th wheel into the rails by aligning the four tabs on the bottom of the legs with the corresponding slots in the base rails. Lower the unit into the rails and secure it with four 1/2-inch rail mounting pins and clips (#14, #15). It may be easier to remove the center head section to reduce weight during positioning. If alignment issues arise with existing base rails, loosely assemble the legs, place the unit on the rails, align the foot tabs with the outermost rectangular slots, secure the foot tabs with pins and clips, then tighten the M14 hex bolts to 100 ft-lbs.
Follow these steps: (1) Slide the handle assembly (#4) over the handle mount bar on the hitch head. (2) Insert the latch spring (#8) into the slot on the handle mount bar and continue sliding the handle assembly into place. (3) Position the handle so the first M8 cap screw (#6) and lock washer (#7) can be dropped into position behind the latch spring. (4) Pull the handle back out and drop the second M8 cap screw and lock washer into position. (5) Slide the latch plate (#5) into position and thread both M8 cap screws into the tapped holes, alternating between screws while tightening. Pulling out on the handle while tightening will ease installation. (6) Confirm the lock bar latches into position and insert the safety lynch pin (#9). Do not over-tighten the M8 cap screws; the handle must slide freely over the mount bar.
All four M14 hex bolts (#10) that attach the leg weldments to the main body must be torqued to 100 ft-lbs. This torque must be applied during initial assembly, after initial 500 miles, and every 1,000 miles thereafter, and prior to each individual use.
The two M8 button head cap screws (#6) that secure the handle assembly and latch plate must be torqued to 16 ft-lbs. Do not over-tighten; the handle assembly must slide freely over the handle mount bar to latch properly.
The two M16 head pivot bolts must be torqued to 200±25 ft-lbs. This torque must be checked before each use and every 1,000 miles.
Follow these critical safety steps: (1) Use wheel chocks in front and behind trailer tires; do not substitute with stones or wood blocks. (2) Never position yourself or others under the trailer's kingpin area during coupling or uncoupling. (3) Set the tow vehicle transmission to park (automatic) or neutral (manual) and apply the emergency brake. (4) Adjust front trailer lifting jacks so the kingpin skid plate is approximately 1/2 inch below the top surface of the hitch's skid plate lead-in ramp. (5) Ensure the hitch handle shows the yellow indicator and jaws are open before coupling. (6) Back up slowly and centered to the trailer. (7) Visually confirm the kingpin is fully seated in the hitch head and the jaws are locked (green indicator visible). (8) Insert the safety lynch pin through the locking handle before towing.
The yellow indicator (triangle) on the handle indicates the hitch is in the coupled position with the jaws open and ready to receive the trailer's kingpin. This is the correct position for coupling. After coupling is complete and the kingpin is fully seated, the indicator will change to green (circle), indicating the jaws are locked.
The red indicator (octagon) means the jaws are unlocked and the operating handle is latched in the unlock position. Do not tow in this configuration. The jaws will close but will not lock. If the red indicator is visible with jaws open, the jaws are unable to fully open and reset to the yellow couple position. Follow the troubleshooting steps in the manual to reset the operating handle to the couple position before attempting to tow.
The green indicator (circle) on the handle indicates the jaws are closed and locked around the trailer's kingpin. This is the correct locked position for towing. The green indicator is visible when viewing from the tow vehicle cab after successful coupling.
Yes. Before coupling, you must either use a single 3/16-inch thick lube plate on the trailer's kingpin or apply high-pressure wheel bearing grease to the hitch's skid plate. Operating without a lube plate or grease will result in accelerated wear and/or damage to the skid plate. Liberally apply grease to the skid plate's top surface before each use and every 1,000 miles.
After coupling and prior to removing trailer wheel blocks and/or raising front trailer jacks, set the towing vehicle in a forward gear and lightly tug on the trailer to ensure 100% coupling has taken place. If resistance is felt, the coupling is complete. If no resistance is felt, the trailer may not be coupled correctly. Do not continue applying forward pressure; immediately stop and back the towing vehicle into the original position. Do not allow the truck and trailer to separate. Review coupling instructions, apply corrective action, and repeat the coupling steps.
Before coupling, check for signs of damage to the locking mechanism. Ensure the jaws are open and the indicator, jaw, handle, and torsion springs are all attached and undamaged. If any springs are missing or damaged, do not attempt to use the hitch until it has been repaired. Also ensure the locking mechanism is free of excessive dirt, rust, grease, snow, ice, or other foreign material. Clean with warm soapy water if necessary and lightly lubricate exposed surfaces with a rust inhibitor.
Follow these steps: (1) Park on a firm, level surface, set transmission to park (automatic) or neutral (manual), and apply the emergency brake. Chock the trailer wheels in front and behind. Disconnect all harnesses, lanyards, and safety devices. Lower or remove the truck tailgate. (2) Extend the front trailer lifting jacks just enough to remove the weight of the trailer from the hitch's skid plate. The gap should be minimal, no more than 1/16 inch. (3) Back the tow vehicle up slightly and push the kingpin completely into the opening on the hitch head. Apply the parking brake. (4) Remove the safety lynch pin from the handle. Unlock the jaws by pulling the handle out about 1/2 inch and swinging it forward until it latches in the unlocked position (red indicator visible). (5) Remove the parking brake and slowly drive the tow vehicle out from under the trailer. As the kingpin moves out, the handle will drop back to the couple position and the indicator will change from red to yellow.
Before towing, perform these checks: (1) Confirm the handle safety latch pin has been installed. (2) Attach electrical harnesses. (3) Attach lanyard and insert electric brake break-away plunger. If hydraulic surge brakes are present, attach lanyard from the surge brake assembly as required. (4) Fully retract front trailer lifting jacks. (5) Close or reinstall the truck tailgate. (6) Remove tire chock blocks. (7) Check running lights, directional signals, and brake lights for proper operation. (8) Pull forward a few feet and apply brakes to check that trailer brakes are activating. Adjust the electric brake controller if necessary.
Lubricate the skid plate before each use and every 1,000 miles. Liberally apply high-pressure wheel bearing grease to the skid plate's top surface. Alternatively, you may use a single 3/16-inch thick lube plate in place of grease.
Lubricate the center pivot point before each use. Remove the center pivot pin (#2) and apply a light coating of high-pressure wheel bearing grease. Replace the pin and ensure it is secured with the safety lynch pin.
Check and retorque the four M14 leg hex bolts (#3) to 100 ft-lbs before each use and every 1,000 miles. Re-torque after the initial 500 miles and every 1,000 miles thereafter.
After each use and before long-term storage, clean the hitch with warm soapy water and dry with towels or compressed air. For optimal service life, it is recommended that the hitch be removed from the vehicle or covered when not in use for extended periods. Spray exposed surfaces with a light coat of rust inhibitor before long-term storage.
Lubricate the locking pawl before each use. Open the jaws and apply a small amount of grease to the curved surface of the locking pawl (#5). The pawl will be accessible through the operating handle opening in the head side plate.
Lubricate the jaw pivot points before each use. Use a grease gun to apply grease to both zerks (#6) located on the front of each jaw. The jaws must be in the closed and locked position for the zerks to be accessible.
Lubricate the linkage pivot points before each use. Use an aerosol applicator to spray a small amount of rust inhibitor or lubricant on the lock handle (#7), linkage bar (#7), and pawl pivot points (#7).
Two removal options are provided. Option 1: Remove the base rail pins and clips, then remove the entire hitch unit from the base rails. Option 2 (recommended): Separate the head from the main body by removing the center lynch pin and large pivot pin, lift and remove the head assembly and yoke, remove the base rail pins and clips, then lift and remove the main body and leg assembly. If binding occurs, loosen the four M14 leg mounting bolts to free them from the rails.
Reinstall the hitch in the reverse order it was removed. If removal method Option 2 was used, follow these steps: (1) Place the main body, still loosely attached to the legs, into the base rails. (2) Insert the four base rail pins and clips. (3) Re-torque the four M14 hex bolts to 100 ft-lbs.

(2) Ensure the locking mechanism is free of excessive dirt, rust, grease, snow, ice, or other foreign material. Clean with warm soapy water and lightly lubricate exposed surfaces with a rust inhibitor. (3) If cycling the handle is unsuccessful, apply pressure to the front of the jaw to manually reset the locking pawl. (4) If all components are undamaged and can freely move, apply pressure to the operating handle as if unlocking and release. Never attempt to uncouple without the handle being in the unlocked position.
Immediately lower the trailer jacks to lift the kingpin off the jaws. Inspect the hitch for damage that may have resulted from the improper coupling attempt. Do not use the hitch if damage exists. If no damage exists, review the coupling instructions and repeat the coupling procedure. Do not allow the truck and trailer to separate, as separation can cause damage to the towing vehicle, hitch, and/or trailer, and may result in serious injury or death. Review the coupling instructions, apply corrective action, and repeat the coupling steps.
If difficulty is experienced fitting the hitch into existing base rails, follow these steps: (1) Loosely assemble the legs to the hitch main body. (2) Place the unit on top of the existing base rails, aligning the foot tabs with the outermost rectangular slots of the base rails. (3) When the foot tabs drop into the four rectangular slots, secure the foot tabs using the four provided pins and clips. (4) Continue assembly by tightening the M14 hex bolts to 100 ft-lbs. (5) If difficulty persists, it may be necessary to loosen the base rail bolts and realign the base rails to facilitate installation. It is recommended to replace old lock washers with new lock washers at this time. Torque base rail bolts to the rail manufacturer's specifications. Continue installation by tightening the hitch bolts to 100 ft-lbs.
