No, you do not need to remove the muffler. However, you must lower the exhaust by disconnecting the two rubber isolator hangers (one on the side and one at the rear of the muffler). Spraying lubricant or soapy water on the metal hanger rod and rubber isolator helps with removal. The exhaust is raised back into position in the final steps.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two holes on each side of the frame rail (four holes total) using a ½" drill bit. The hitch is first positioned as a template to mark the rear hole locations. After marking, the hitch is lowered, holes are drilled, and any burrs are removed before fasteners are installed.
Required modifications include: (1) removal of the appearance panel covering the driver's side frame rail, (2) removal of 10 mm hex nuts and plastic rivets from the panel, (3) removal of rubber plugs from the frame rail (if present), (4) lowering the exhaust by disconnecting rubber isolator hangers, (5) removal of the heat shield using a 10 mm socket and trimming it as shown in Figure 2, (6) removal of the lower fascia trim by removing plastic rivets and screws, (7) drilling four ½" holes in the frame rails, and (8) trimming the lower fascia as shown in Figure 3 with recommended radius in corners. All removed rubber plugs and the center plastic fascia tab must be returned to the vehicle owner.
All 7/16-14 GR5 fasteners must be tightened with a torque wrench to 50 Lb.-Ft. (68 N·M). Proper torque is essential to keep the hitch secure to the vehicle when towing.
The pull wire (fish wire) procedure is used to install fasteners through the frame rail access hole without removing the frame rail. Carriage bolts and spacers are inserted into the existing access hole with the pull wire attached. The pull wire is fed through the forward holes on the hitch to raise it into position. After marking and drilling the rear holes, the coiled end of the pull wire is fed through the drilled hole in the frame rail and out the access hole. The pull wire is then pulled to draw the fasteners into location. Pull wires remain attached until the final hitch installation step.
The conical washer must be installed with the teeth side against the hitch. The washer is used to hold the bolt in place while the pull wire is removed and the hex nut is attached.
After raising the hitch into position using the pull wire procedure and hand-tightening both forward fasteners, check that the hitch is even and centered on the vehicle before using it as a template to mark the rear holes. The hitch must be level and centered before drilling the rear mounting holes.
Always wear safety glasses when installing the hitch. Observe safety precautions when working beneath a vehicle. Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch. If the hitch is removed, plug all holes in the trunk pan or other body panels to prevent entry of water and exhaust fumes.
