Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions. Do not assume existing bolts are adequate for baseplate mounting, even though bolts may be present. The manual specifies which existing bolts to reuse (three metric bolts on the driver's side) and which new hardware to use for the passenger's side.
Yes, some drilling and trimming is required. You will drill four holes on the passenger's side using a 13/32" drill bit, using the baseplate as a template. The manual also notes that a hole must be drilled according to the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit instructions.
No, the BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle but is not listed in the included parts. It must be purchased separately.
1. Remove three metric bolts on both sides of the vehicle using a 16MM socket while someone holds the gearbox and idler arm; set bolts aside for reinstallation. 2. Hold the baseplate in place and insert the three existing bolts on the driver's side through the baseplate, frame, and gearbox; tighten them. 3. Clamp the baseplate on the passenger's side with a large vise grip. Using the baseplate as a template, drill four holes with a 13/32" drill bit. 4. Insert 3/8"-16 nut plates into the frame, align with the drilled holes, insert 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" hex bolts with 3/8" lock washers, and tighten all bolts.
Yes, when removing the three metric bolts from both sides of the vehicle in Step 1, you must have someone hold the gearbox and idler arm while you remove the bolts using a 16MM socket.
A 13/32" drill bit is used to drill four holes on the passenger's side of the vehicle, using the baseplate as a template.
Yes, the manual states that "some drilling and trimming is required" as part of the installation. Once the four holes are drilled on the passenger's side, these modifications are permanent. The manual recommends using good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting.
The 3/8"-16 hex bolts are Grade 5. According to the torque chart provided in the manual, Grade 5 3/8" bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. Always apply Loctite Red to all bolts before tightening.
The manual does not specify the torque value for the three existing metric bolts that are removed and reinstalled on the driver's side. Contact Blue Ox Customer Care at (402) 385-3051 or consult your Jeep Wrangler owner's manual for the manufacturer's specification.
Yes, you must use Loctite Red on all bolts before tightening. Tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided in the manual.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for your specific GVWR.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX1120 kit includes two Class III baseplate safety cables and two 3/8" quicklinks. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed. The cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended torque specifications and apply Loctite Red to all bolts.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
Yes, remove the attachment tabs when not in use (if applicable).
Register your product online at www.blueox.com to receive alerts about product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and recalls. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Use good quality paint to spray any cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting.

No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to use the correct parts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
