Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. Yes, the fascia cover and fascia must be removed and reinstalled for baseplate installation. The fascia cover is held by nine push pins, the fascia is secured by six bolts at the top edge (T15 Torx), four bolts in the wheel well liner on each side (T15 Torx), and ten bolts on the underside (7MM socket, five on each side). The electrical harness on the passenger side must be unplugged before removing the fascia.
Yes, drilling is required. After positioning the baseplate flush with the top and front lips of the frame, you must drill the bottom holes on each side of the baseplate through the frame using a 3/8" drill bit. Once the first bolts are fully tightened, drill the remaining holes on each side and install the remaining 3/8" hardware.
Trimming is required in several areas: (1) trim the plastic shielding flush under the bumper and across the bottom on both sides; (2) use a reciprocating saw to trim the bracket flush with the bottom side of the bumper on both sides; (3) use a reciprocating saw to trim the end of the bumper flush with the outside of the frame on both sides; (4) trim indicated areas on both sides so they are flush with the frame; (5) on the backside of the fascia, trim the lower tab back flush with the lip on both sides; (6) mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstalling.
The plastic housing (removed in step 7) and the lower grille (removed in step 8) are not reinstalled. The plastic reinforcement push pins on the bumper face are also not reinstalled. All other removed components, including the fascia cover, fascia, fender flares, and wheel well liners, are reinstalled after baseplate installation.
The manual provides general torque specifications for metric and inch bolts by grade. For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite Red applied to the threads. However, the manual does not specify the grade of the 3/8"-16 bolts used to attach the baseplate to the frame.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You must reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications and ensure you do not exceed the GVWR.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and cannot be reused. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX1519 kit includes 2 class IV safety cables (226-0049) and 2 1/2" quicklinks (229-0512). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and all accessories are functioning properly. After installation, verify that the baseplate is flush with the top and front lips of the frame and that it is level. Ensure that the permanent baseplate safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Check that all bolts are tightened to the appropriate torque specifications with Loctite Red applied.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The BX8848 4-Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for the BX1519 baseplate on the 2016-20 Buick Envision. The manual does not specify whether this kit is included in the baseplate package or must be purchased separately. Remove the temperature sensor and let it hang during baseplate installation. After the baseplate is installed, use the supplied 8" nylon cable tie to attach the temperature sensor to the existing hole in the plastic piece below the radiator on the driver side of the vehicle.
Position the baseplate flush with the top and front lips of the frame, level and clamp it into position. Using a 3/8" drill bit, drill the bottom holes on each side of the baseplate through the frame first. Install and fully tighten the 3/8" hardware at these holes. Once the first bolts are fully tightened, drill the remaining holes on each side of the baseplate through the frame. Install and fully tighten the remaining 3/8" hardware.
Pull back the wheel well liner. Using a 7MM socket, remove the bolt (gray arrow). Then release the clips from the fender flare (left, white arrow). Pull straight up on the flare to release the bottom and then pull out away from the vehicle. Repeat on both sides of the vehicle.
Place all removed components on a flat, sturdy surface. All items will be reinstalled unless otherwise noted after the baseplate is installed. The plastic housing and lower grille are not reinstalled. All other components, including the fascia cover, fascia, fender flares, and wheel well liners, must be reinstalled.
Yes, use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting.
No. Even though bolts may exist on the vehicle, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use the hardware supplied in the hardware kit and existing hardware as specified in the installation instructions. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Using non-genuine or incorrect bolts will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Yes, the breakaway switch is optional. If you choose to install it, bolt the breakaway to the baseplate bracket with the supplied 1/4" hardware.

Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be routed around the crossmember or frame of the towed vehicle. The manual shows recommended installation routing in the photos. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts on both sides of the vehicle.
On the backside of the fascia, trim the lower tab back flush with the lip on both sides. Hold the fascia as close to its original position as possible, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs. Reinstall the fascia and fascia cover, and reconnect all electrical connections.
