The front fascia, horn brackets, and metal bumper must be removed for installation. The air dam must also be trimmed. These components are reinstalled after baseplate installation is complete.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two holes into the underside of the frame on each side of the vehicle using a 13/32" drill bit, and three additional holes into the frame endplate on each side using the same drill bit. Nut plates are then inserted into the drilled holes.
The air dam must be trimmed using a utility knife. Trim away the air dam around the soft rubber of the lower portion, then upward to the metal bumper. Finish with a horizontal cut flush with the bottom of the metal bumper. This must be done on both sides of the vehicle to open up the area for baseplate installation.
The drilling of frame holes is permanent. The air dam trimming is also permanent. However, the manual notes that dimensional variations between vehicles can be considerable, and minor adjustments may include filing holes slightly, bending electrical rods, and/or bending end plates to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.

Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Two 36" Class III cables are included with the BX1510. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and must be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should then be secured to a solid piece of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. If the vehicle has additional options that interfere with the recommended mounting location, secure the cable to an alternative solid frame location as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables.
