Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

The fascia, belly pan, horn and air dams must be removed for installation. The air dams will not be reinstalled. The bumper bracket, belly pan and grille will be trimmed during installation. Handling of cosmetic parts may require protective covers, rags or specialty tools to prevent damage.
Yes, drilling is required. Using the baseplate as a template with a 13/32" drill bit, you will drill four holes (one lower left hole first to ensure the baseplate is level with the frame, then the remaining three holes). This is done on both sides of the vehicle.
Using a reciprocating saw, the bottom of the bumper bracket is marked and cut so that it is flush with the bottom of the frame rail. This is done on both sides of the vehicle.
Multiple cuts are made to the belly pan using a utility knife: On the outside corners, cut approximately 1/2" down from the top, straight across the bottom 3 1/4" and up. On the inside corners, cut 1" down, then 2 1/2" back and 3" down. On the center extension, measure down 3/4", then cut around the top 2 1/2" down and straight across. On the back side of the fascia, cut off the knobs on the bottom of the styrofoam, then cut the whole lower section off 1 1/2" flush with the bottom of the styrofoam.
Using a hack saw blade, trim necessary openings in the grille for the attachment tabs. This is done on both sides of the vehicle.
The 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" hex bolts should be tightened according to the torque chart on the front page of the installation instructions or page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions. All bolts must have Loctite RED applied before tightening. Based on the torque chart provided, Grade 5 3/8" bolts are torqued to 33 foot-pounds.
Grade 5 bolt torque specifications are: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs.

The removal sequence is: (1) two push pins from top of plastic cover, (2) four push pins from top of fascia, (3) push pin from between headlights on both sides, (4) two metric bolts from inside wheel well in front of tire on edge of fascia using 7mm socket on both sides, (5) two metric bolts from underside of fascia just forward of front tire using 7mm socket on both sides, (6) three push pins from bottom corner of fascia on both sides, (7) loosen two metric bolts just forward of front tire on wheel well using 10mm socket on both sides and pull fascia forward to remove, (8) three metric bolts from across bottom of belly pan underneath bumper using 10mm socket, (9) two push pins from belly pan extensions one on each side, (10) two bolts just forward of front tire on wheel well using 7mm socket and pull forward on center extension to remove belly pan, (11) one metric bolt from horn bracket on passenger side using 10mm socket.
Align the baseplate with the webbing at the top of the frame rail and the contour on the back edge of the frame rail. Clamp in place with vise grips. Using the baseplate as a template with a 13/32" drill bit, drill the lower left hole first (gray arrow) while ensuring the baseplate is level with the frame. Drill the remaining three holes on both sides. Insert 3/8-16 nut plates through the opening in the side of the frame rail, align to drilled holes, and install 3/8-16 x 1 1/2" hex bolts with 3/8" lock washers. Apply Loctite RED to all bolts before tightening to nut plates. Trim excess nut plate wires.
The horn bracket is remounted using a self tapping screw.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails or becomes disconnected. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system; the weight rating of two cables together will not qualify. Do not mount cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation is to secure the cable to the frame of the vehicle. If additional options may interfere with the suggested mounting, secure the cable to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
Ensure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning BEFORE installing the fascia.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2008-09 Buick LaCrosse with the BX1514 baseplate. A possible location for installation is shown in the manual.
Many Blue Ox baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware to mount the baseplate to the towed vehicle. However, even though bolts are present, do not assume they are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use hardware supplied in the hardware kit or existing hardware specified in the Baseplate Installation Instructions. In most cases, replacement bolts will be Grade 5.
If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases it will be Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. For your safety and the preservation of your baseplate, be sure to use a genuine factory replacement part, not a homemade or non-typical substitute.
Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. Towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will also void the warranty.
