Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.

The installation involves removal and reinstallation of the fascia, radiator cover, and lower bumper support, as well as drilling and trimming. Required tools include: 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 7/16" socket, 3/4" socket, 15MM socket, 7/16" wrench, 3/4" wrench, flat screwdriver, drill, 17/32" drill bit, 1-1/2" hole saw, torque wrench, tape measure, utility knife, large vice grip, and Loctite RED. A power drill is used during installation; be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length when operating.

The fascia, radiator cover, and lower bumper support must be removed during installation and reinstalled after the baseplate is mounted. Specifically: remove nine push pins from the radiator cover on top of the fascia, remove six bolts from the fascia using a 10MM socket, remove two 7MM bolts and two push pins in front of each tire, and remove one 10MM bolt and one push pin directly in front of each tire underneath the fascia.
Yes, drilling is required. The baseplate uses existing bolt holes where possible, but additional holes must be drilled with a 17/32" drill bit to accommodate 1/2-13 x 1 1/4 hex bolts. Holes are drilled at the front of the baseplate (if existing holes do not align), at the bottom of the baseplate on both sides, and on the side plates of the baseplate on both sides. An optional 1-1/2" hole saw is used to drill through the fascia frame for an electrical connector if desired.
Yes, trimming is required. Using a utility knife, cut out the chrome webbing on the front of the fascia on both sides to accommodate the baseplate. After chrome trimming, trim the plastic on the backside of the fascia, then turn the fascia over and trim the second layer of plastic from the front side of the fascia.
The torque specification for 1/2-13 hex bolts is 78 foot-pounds for Grade 5 bolts and 119 foot-pounds for Grade 8 bolts. The BX1699 kit includes 1/2-13 x 1 1/4 hex bolts Grade 5. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite RED applied before tightening, and torqued according to the torque chart on the front page of the instructions.
The torque specification for 1/4-20 hex bolts is 10 foot-pounds for Grade 5 bolts and 14 foot-pounds for Grade 8 bolts. The BX1699 kit includes 1/4-20 x 3/4 hex bolts Grade 5 for the optional breakaway bracket. Apply Loctite RED before tightening.
Start with the front bolts on each side of the baseplate, using existing bolt holes in the frame as a guide. Ensure the baseplate is level and clamp with large vice grips. Insert 1/2-13 x 1 1/4 hex bolts with 1/2-13 hex nylon insert lock nuts, applying Loctite RED before tightening. Next, drill and install bolts at the bottom of the baseplate on both sides. Finally, drill and install the remaining two holes on the side plates of the baseplate on both sides. Confirm the baseplate remains level throughout.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation secures the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Do this on both sides. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. If additional options interfere with the suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables.
The breakaway bracket installation is optional. If you choose to install it, remove the driver's side bolt from the bellypan using a 15MM socket. Attach the breakaway bracket into the existing hole on the bellypan using the existing bolt, then attach the breakaway bracket to the fascia with a 1/4-20 x 3/4 hex bolt and 1/4-20 hex nylon nut.
The electrical connector installation is optional. To mount an electrical connector (not provided), drill a 1-1/2" hole through the bottom of the fascia frame in the center underneath the license plate frame. Insert the electrical adapter and use it as a template to drill additional holes on each side to attach with hardware. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor.
Do not use the towed vehicle for storing luggage, equipment, etc. This may cause you to exceed the towing capacity of the tow bar, baseplate, and its accessories.
Before towing, ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Verify that the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Confirm the vehicle weight and that both your tow bar and hitch are adequately rated for the vehicle's overall weight.
The permanent baseplate safety cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed on the vehicle. Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. The BX8848 Diode Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2011-14 Cadillac Escalade Platinum with the BX1699 baseplate. The manual does not specify whether it is required or optional, but recommends its use. The factory bolts removed from the radiator cover, fascia, and lower bumper support should be set aside and reinstalled when those components are reinstalled. However, for baseplate mounting, use only the hardware supplied in the hardware kit or existing hardware specified in the Baseplate Towing Installation Instructions. Do not assume existing holes and bolts are adequate for baseplate mounting. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5).

If existing bolt holes need to be drilled to accommodate the baseplate, use a 17/32" drill bit to accommodate the 1/2-13 x 1 1/4 hex bolts. Ensure the baseplate remains level while drilling. The manual notes that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and minor adjustments such as filing a hole slightly, bending electrical rods, or bending end plates may be necessary to compensate for auto manufacturer's tolerances.
After clamping the baseplate with large vice grips, confirm that the baseplate is level. If it is not level, reposition the baseplate and re-clamp. The manual specifically instructs to "confirm baseplate remains level" when drilling the bottom holes on both sides.
