Even with the roomiest of vehicles, packing the car for a long trip can quickly turn into a frustrating game of Tetris. CURT cargo carriers are a simple yet effective solution for maximizing the storage area of your vehicle. The advantage of a hitch-mounted cargo carrier is that it can be mounted on the rear or front end of a vehicle as long as the vehicle is properly equipped with the right receiver hitch. Mounting a cargo carrier in the front opens up the rear receiver hitch for towing a trailer or adding a second carrier or bike rack if needed. The hitch-mounted design also makes installation quick and easy. CURT introduces the mesh, bolt-together, tray-style cargo carrier. This carrier features a lightweight aluminum design to put less strain on your vehicle and resist rust and corrosion from outdoor exposure. It comes with a 2" x 2" shank and can hold up to 500 lbs. of cargo. This particular model also comes with a folding shank to allow the cargo carrier to be folded up when not in use. It offers a total storage area of 60" x 20". CURT tray-style cargo carriers are versatile and simple to use. The CURT 18100 is designed for 2" receiver tube hitch systems. Consult the manufacturer's fitment database or contact CURT product support at 877.287.8634 to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.
You will need a 17mm wrench, 24mm wrench, and an adjustable wrench. A torque wrench is also required to tighten bolts to specification (M10 bolts to 16 ft-lbs., M16 bolts to 70 ft-lbs.).
No. The CURT 18100 is a bolt-together assembly with no drilling, cutting, welding, or vehicle modifications required.
M10 bolts must be torqued to 16 ft-lbs. M16 bolts must be torqued to 70 ft-lbs. All bolts should be hand-tightened first, then fully tightened to these specifications.
No. Never use the cargo carrier as a step or platform—injury may result. It is designed only for carrying cargo.
No. Do not carry flammable items on the carrier or allow exhaust fumes to blow directly on your cargo. This is a fire hazard.
Periodic inspection of your product should be performed to ensure all hardware and components remain secure. Retighten bolts as needed.
The package includes: 2 platform frame halves, 1 shank (2"), 2 connecting plates, 1 folding shank assembly, 1 clip, 1 pin (5/8"), 1 lock nut (M16), 1 hex bolt (M16 x 80mm), 14 lock nuts (M10), 8 carriage bolts (M10 x 20mm), 4 carriage bolts (M10 x 30mm), 2 carriage bolts (M10 x 75mm), 1 flat brace, 2 support bridges, and 2 braces. All fasteners are included.
Align the two platform halves. Using the top two holes only, connect the platform halves and connecting plates with M10 x 20mm carriage bolts and M10 lock nuts. Hand tighten only at this stage.
Place the 2" shank under the middle of the platform. Place the support bridge under the 2" shank. Place the flat brace in the top middle of the platform. Connect by hand-tightening the M10 x 75mm carriage bolt and M10 lock nut.
Place one brace on the top side of each end of the support bridge. Secure each with an M10 x 30mm carriage bolt and M10 lock nut. Hand tighten at this stage.
After completing Steps 1–3 with hand-tightening, use the bottom two holes to finish connecting the platform halves and connecting plates with M10 x 20mm carriage bolts and M10 lock nuts. Hand tighten these as well, then fully tighten all bolts and lock nuts to the specified torque specs in one final pass.
Insert the 2" shank into the folding shank assembly. Align all holes. Insert the M16 x 80mm hex bolt through the hole closest to the cargo carrier and secure with the M16 lock nut. Torque the M16 bolt to 70 ft-lbs.
The 5/8" pin should be inserted in the hole closest to the vehicle. To fold the basket, remove the pin, fold the basket up, and place the pin in the lower hole. The clip must always be attached to the pin.
Hand-tighten all bolts and lock nuts during Steps 1–4. After all components are assembled and aligned, fully tighten all bolts and lock nuts to the specified torque specs: M10 bolts to 16 ft-lbs. and M16 bolts to 70 ft-lbs.
Always use caution when in reverse to help avoid personal injury. Be aware of the cargo carrier's position and any obstacles behind the vehicle.
Loads must be evenly distributed on the platform. Do not place all weight on one side or corner of the carrier.
No. The CURT 18100 is designed only for cargo. Do not use to transport people.
Do not block brake lights or turn signals with the cargo carrier or its load. Ensure all lights remain visible and functional.
Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The CURT 18100 has a maximum weight capacity of 500 lbs., but your vehicle's towing capacity may be lower. Always follow the more restrictive limit.
Periodic inspection should be performed to ensure all hardware and components remain secure. The manual does not specify an exact interval; inspect before each use and after long trips.
