The CURT 70102 Custom Tow Bar Base Plate Brackets for Dinghy Towing, Fits Select Jeep Wrangler JK (Part #BKDK70102) fits the following vehicles: 2007-2017 Jeep Wrangler; 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK. Always verify your specific year, make, and model before ordering.
Yes, the CURT 70102 Custom Tow Bar Base Plate Brackets for Dinghy Towing, Fits Select Jeep Wrangler JK (Part #BKDK70102) is designed to fit the 2007-2017 Jeep Wrangler.
The CURT 70102 Custom Tow Bar Base Plate Brackets for Dinghy Towing, Fits Select Jeep Wrangler JK (Part #BKDK70102) Drilling is required for installation. Typical installation time is 90+ minutes. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The CURT 70102 is a tow bar base plate designed for dinghy towing. It includes a base plate, mounting tabs, safety cables, quick links, spacer plates, carriage bolts, flange nuts, and socket plugs. The installed attachment tabs measure 14-1/2" in height and 24" in width. When not towing, socket plugs insert into the ends of the base plate.
Frame trimming is required only for 2007–2009 models. These vehicles have a frame extension that must be cut flush with the vertical portion of the frame using a reciprocating saw or die grinder. All other model years do not require frame trimming. After cutting, CURT recommends finishing any exposed metal edges with paint to help prevent corrosion.
Installation requires removal and reinstallation of the front underbody panel and metal bumper, drilling, and trimming of the underbody fascia. For 2007–2009 models, frame extension trimming is also required. The manual does not specify which vehicle makes and models are compatible; contact CURT at 877.287.8634 or visit curtmfg.com for fitment confirmation.
Required tools are: torque wrench, drill, sockets (3/4", 5/16", 18mm), drill bit (17/32"), tape measure, large vise grip, reciprocating saw, utility knife, fishwire (1/2" and 5/8"), Phillips screwdriver, and trim removal tool. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
The kit includes: 1 tow bar base plate, 2 spacer plates (1/2"), 2 safety cables (3,500 lbs. each), 2 tow bar mounting tabs, 4 square hole spacers (1/4" x 1" x 2-1/2"), 4 carriage bolts (1/2"-13 x 2", grade 8), 4 flange nuts (1/2"-13, grade 8), 2 square hole spacers (3/8" x 1-1/4" x 2-1/2"), 2 carriage bolts (5/8"-11 x 2", grade 8), 2 flange nuts (5/8"-11, grade 8), 2 quick links (1/4"), and 2 socket plugs. Fishwire is also included.
The manual does not specify whether battery disconnection is required. Contact CURT Product Support at 877.287.8634 for guidance on this step.
The first step is to remove the four push pins from the bottom of the underbody panel—two on each side of the vehicle—using a Phillips head screwdriver and trim removal tool. Then remove the two push pins from the backside tabs of the underbody panel and set the panel aside.
First, unplug the bumper fog lights. Then use an 18mm socket to remove four bolts on the outer edge of the frame (two on each side) and four bolts on the inner edge of the frame (two on each side). Carefully pull the bumper out and unclip the wiring harness from the back side. With the harness separated, set the bumper aside.
Using the top two tow bar base plate holes as a guide, drill two 17/32" holes in the vehicle frame. A 17/32" drill bit is included in the required tools list.
Yes. After installing the base plate, hold up the underbody panel in its original position and mark where the fascia will need to be trimmed to make space for the base plate side bracket. Both sides of the vehicle will need to be trimmed. Trim off the marked areas and reinstall the panel.
The 5/8"-11 carriage bolts and flange nuts must be torqued to 180 lb-ft. This applies to the middle hole attachment on both sides of the vehicle.
The 1/2"-13 carriage bolts and flange nuts must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. This applies to the top two holes on both sides of the vehicle.
1. Remove underbody panel push pins and set panel aside. 2. Unplug fog lights and remove bumper bolts using 18mm socket. 3. Remove bumper and unclip wiring harness. 4. For 2007–2009 models, trim frame extension flush with vertical frame portion. 5. Position base plate with lower hole matching middle frame hole; clamp in place. 6. Fishwire 5/8"-11 x 2" carriage bolt and 3/8" spacer into middle hole; torque to 180 lb-ft. 7. Drill two 17/32" holes in frame using top base plate holes as guide. 8. Install 1/2" spacer plate between base plate and frame. 9. Fishwire two 1/2"-13 x 2" carriage bolts with 1/4" spacers; torque to 110 lb-ft. 10. Reinstall bumper and reconnect fog lights. 11. Install safety cables and quick links. 12. Trim underbody fascia and reinstall panel.
Fishwiring is the process of routing fasteners (carriage bolts) through the vehicle frame from inside the frame, using fishwire (flexible wire) as a guide. The manual includes fishwire in the kit (1/2" and 5/8" sizes) to help thread bolts through the frame holes. The bolts are then secured with flange nuts on the opposite side.
Install the tow bar mounting tabs (#4) only when ready to tow. When not towing, insert the socket plugs (#12) into the ends of the tow bar base plates (#1).
Yes. When dinghy towing a vehicle with the CURT 70102 tow bar, base plate safety cables must be used at all times. In the event of a disconnect, the safety cables are designed to help prevent complete vehicle separation. Two cables must be installed—one on each side of the vehicle. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle. Safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
Each safety cable is rated for 3,500 lbs. Two cables are included in the kit. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
Safety glasses should be worn at all times during installation. Take care when cutting any plastic or metal, as injury may occur if done improperly. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Ensure safety cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring, or other components.
After installation, verify that all fasteners are tight and all structural components are sound. Ensure the base plate is level with the frame. Confirm that safety cables do not pinch or interfere with hoses, wiring, or other components. Check that the underbody panel is properly reinstalled and trimmed. Verify that the bumper is securely reattached and fog lights are plugged in.
Periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts. Review the owner's manual for your towing vehicle and trailer for specific recommendations, capacities, and requirements.
The safety cables must be connected to the base plate and the vehicle frame. Loop them around the vehicle frame and link them to the tow bar base plates using quick links. There must be one cable on each side of the vehicle. Make sure the cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring, or other components. Use the illustrations in the manual as a guide for proper routing.
The CURT 70102 is designed for all models, with specific frame trimming required for 2007–2009 vehicles. Contact CURT at 877.287.8634 or visit curtmfg.com to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle make and model.
Yes. You must drill two 17/32" holes in the vehicle frame using the top two tow bar base plate holes as a guide. Trimming of the underbody fascia is also required.
Torque 5/8"-11 hardware to 180 lb-ft (middle hole, both sides). Torque 1/2"-13 hardware to 110 lb-ft (top holes, both sides). Use a torque wrench to ensure proper tightening.
The front underbody panel and metal bumper must be removed. The bumper is held by eight bolts (18mm socket) and has a wiring harness that must be unplugged and unclipped. Both components are reinstalled after base plate installation.
When not towing, insert the socket plugs (#12) into the ends of the tow bar base plates (#1). Install the tow bar mounting tabs (#4) only when ready to tow.
Reposition the tow bar base plate so the lower hole matches up with the middle hole on the vehicle frame. Use a level to verify alignment. Once properly positioned, clamp the base plate into place before proceeding with fastener installation. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.
Reroute the safety cables to avoid pinching or interfering with any hoses, wiring, or other components. The cables must be connected to the base plate and the vehicle frame, looped around the frame, and linked to the tow bar base plates using quick links. Refer to the illustrations in the manual for proper routing guidance.
Use the fishwire (included in the kit) to guide the carriage bolts through the frame holes from inside the frame. The 1/2" fishwire is used for the 1/2"-13 bolts, and the 5/8" fishwire is used for the 5/8"-11 bolts. Thread the fishwire through the hole first, then attach the bolt to the fishwire and pull it through.
