The CURT 70113 is a frame-mounted tow bar base plate designed for dinghy towing. It includes a base plate, two mounting tabs, two permanent safety cables rated at 7,500 lbs each, quick links, socket plugs, and all required hardware. The installed attachment tabs measure 13-1/2" in height and 21-1/2" in width.
Yes. The installation requires temporary removal and reinstallation of fascia panels, horns, and the windshield washer reservoir. Drilling and trimming of plastic bumper shielding and frame are required. On ST models with active air intake, additional notching of the air intake fins is required: a 1/2" deep x 3-1/4" wide notch in the second and third fins, plus a 1/2" deep notch in the plastic outer frame on each side.
Required tools include: torque wrench, drill, reciprocating saw, hole saw (1-1/4"), drill bits (3/8"), sockets (7/16", 9/16", 8mm, 10mm), Torx T30 bit, wrench (7/16", 9/16"), nut driver (5/16"), flat head screwdriver, large vise grip, utility knife, and paint pen. The manual includes ten 3/8" fishwires.
The following must be removed: both headlights (held by T30 Torx screws), fascia cover (five T30 Torx screws and two push pins), hood release cable, wheel well liner components (T30 Torx screws and push pins), underbody fascia panel (six push pins and four T30 Torx screws), driver-side horn, and passenger-side windshield washer reservoir (two 10mm screws, wiring harnesses and fluid lines). Have a clean container ready to catch washer fluid.
Use a T30 Torx bit to remove the two screws holding each headlight in place. Unplug the wiring harness on each side and set the headlights aside. Repeat the process on both sides of the vehicle.
1. Use a T30 Torx bit to remove five screws in the top fascia cover, then remove two push pins in the corners. 2. Unhook the hood release cable from the latch on the back of the fascia cover and unsnap it from retainer clips. 3. Use a T30 Torx bit to remove two screws along the inside edge of the wheel well liner on each side, then remove the push pin in the fender fascia joint on each side. 4. Remove six push pins along the outer edge of the underbody fascia panel (three per side) and four T30 Torx screws (two per side, forward of the front tires). 5. Release the clips beneath the headlight mounting locations on each side. 6. Carefully pull the fascia corners away from the vehicle and unplug any wiring harnesses.
Driver-side horn: Use an 8mm socket to remove the screw in the driver-side component ahead of the wheel well near the horn, then remove the screw holding the horn in place. Passenger-side horn: Use a 10mm socket to remove the two screws holding it in place. Windshield washer reservoir: Use a 10mm socket to remove two screws, disconnect wiring harnesses and fluid lines. Have a clean container ready to catch washer fluid, and set the fluid aside for refilling after installation.
Two 1-1/4" holes must be drilled in the frame using a hole saw. These are drilled using existing holes as guides after unclipping the wiring harness from the top of the frame on each side. Additionally, two 3/8" holes must be drilled in the vehicle frame using the two bottom holes of the base plate as a guide on each side.
Plastic bumper shielding must be trimmed flush with the frame on both sides using a utility knife, marked with a paint pen as needed. The windshield washer reservoir mounting tab on the passenger side must be trimmed off using a metal-cutting tool (reciprocating saw or cutoff wheel). On ST models, a 1/2" deep x 3-1/4" wide notch must be cut in the second and third fins of the active air intake, plus a 1/2" deep notch in the plastic outer frame on each side. The front fascia must be trimmed to make space for safety cable loops and attachment tabs before reinstallation.
All 3/8" hardware (carriage bolts, square hole spacers, and flange nuts) must be torqued to 37 lb-ft. This applies to both the three existing holes in the frame on each side and the two newly drilled 3/8" holes on each side.
1. Position the base plate on the frame and fishwire 3/8" carriage bolts (#6) and square hole spacers (#4) into the three existing holes in the frame on each side. Install 3/8" flange nuts (#5) but do not fully tighten. 2. Using the two bottom holes as a guide, drill 3/8" holes in the vehicle frame. 3. Install the provided 3/8" hardware (spacers, bolts, and nuts). 4. Torque all hardware to 37 lb-ft on both sides.
Install the permanent safety cables (#3) and quick links (#10) by looping them around the vehicle frame and linking them to the tow bar base plate (#1). One cable must be installed on each side of the vehicle. Ensure cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring or other components. The cables must be connected to both the base plate and the vehicle frame, and each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle. Cables are rated at 7,500 lbs each.
Reinstall the windshield washer reservoir on the passenger side. Reconnect the wiring harnesses and fluid lines. Refill with the washer fluid that was set aside during removal.
Reinstall the passenger-side horn by attaching it to the base plate using the included 1/4" hardware: hex bolt (#7), flat washer (#8), and Nylock nut (#9).
Reinstall the wheel well component on the driver side, then reinstall the driver-side horn onto the webbing.
Hold up the front fascia in its original position and mark where it will need to be trimmed to make space for the safety cable loops and attachment tabs. Trim off the marked areas. Reinstall the fascia and fascia cover, making sure to reconnect all electrical harnesses.
When not towing, insert the socket plugs (#11) into the ends of the tow bar base plate (#1). When ready to tow, install the tow bar mounting tabs (#2).
Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. Take care when cutting any plastic or metal as injury may occur if done improperly. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Ensure safety cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring or other components.
No. Base plate safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle. Both must be used when dinghy towing.
Periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts. Review the owner's manual for both your towed vehicle and towing vehicle for specific recommendations, capacities and requirements.

Repeat on both sides of the vehicle. If the base plate still does not fit, check that all fascia components have been properly removed and that the frame is clear of obstructions.
Ensure cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring or other components. If interference occurs, reposition the cables so they loop around the vehicle frame without contacting other parts. The cables must be connected to both the base plate and the vehicle frame with one cable on each side.
