The CURT 70118 is a tow bar base plate designed for dinghy towing. It includes a base plate, mounting tabs, safety cables rated at 7,500 lbs each, quick links, socket plugs, and all required fasteners. The base plate measures 16" in height and 20" in width when installed with attachment tabs.
Required tools include: torque wrench, drill with 3/8" bit, sockets (7mm, 7/16", 9/16"), nut driver (5/16"), T15 Torx bit, wrenches (7/16", 9/16"), tape measure, Phillips and flat head screwdrivers, utility knife, aviator shears, large vise grip, paint pen, level, and 3/8" fishwire (four included).
Yes. The front fascia panel must be temporarily removed and reinstalled as part of the installation. You will remove seven T15 Torx screws from the top edge of the grill, four screws from inside each wheel well liner, and ten 7mm bolts from the underside of the vehicle before pulling the bumper fascia up and out at the edges. Any electrical harnesses must be disconnected before removal.
The installation is rated as Difficult. Installation difficulty is based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and availability of proper tools and equipment.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill 3/8" holes into the lower frame pinch seam using the side plate holes as a guide. The manual states that some drilling and trimming are required as part of the installation process.
Yes. Trimming is required. For All-Terrain models, you will trim marked areas from the bumper using tin snips or aviator shears. For Denali models, you will trim the radiator air dam as needed. Additionally, the front fascia must be trimmed to make space for the safety cable loops and attachment tabs before reinstallation.
For All-Terrain models, use a paint pen to mark areas on the bumper that need to be trimmed, then cut them off with tin snips or aviator shears. For Denali models, hold the base plate in position and use a paint pen to mark areas on the radiator air dam that need to be trimmed as needed, then cut them off with tin snips or aviator shears.
1. Remove seven T15 Torx screws from the top edge of the grill. 2. Remove four T15 Torx screws from inside each wheel well liner. 3. Pull the plastic wheel edge trim pieces forward. 4. Pull the wheel well liner back and remove the bolt at the bumper fascia joint on each side. 5. Remove ten 7mm bolts from the underside of the vehicle. 6. Remove the bumper fascia and disconnect electrical harnesses. Trim bumper or radiator air dam as needed. 7. Position and clamp the base plate, then fishwire carriage bolts into the front holes and drill the rear holes. 8. Install hex head bolts into the lower frame pinch seam. 9. Install safety cables and quick links. 10. Trim the front fascia and reinstall it with electrical harnesses reconnected. Install mounting tabs when ready to tow, or socket plugs when not towing.
Fishwire is a technique used to route fasteners through tight spaces. The manual includes four pieces of 3/8" fishwire. In Step 7, you use fishwire to route a 3/8" carriage bolt and square hole spacer into the front-most hole on each side of the vehicle before securing them with flange nuts.
Position the tow bar base plate on the vehicle frame and clamp it into place. Use the side plate holes as a guide for drilling and bolt placement. The base plate is secured with carriage bolts in the front holes (fishwired into place) and hex head bolts in the rear holes (after drilling).
The base plate is secured using: four 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" carriage bolts (grade 8) with square hole spacers in the front holes, secured with 3/8"-16 flange nuts; and four 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" hex head bolts (grade 8) with lock washers in the rear holes, secured with 3/8"-16 nylock nuts. All fasteners are grade 8.
Square hole spacers (1/4" x 1" x 2") are installed with the carriage bolts. Four spacers are included—two for the front-most holes and two for the rear holes. They are secured with 3/8"-16 flange nuts.
Install the permanent safety cables by looping them around the vehicle frame and linking them to the tow bar base plate using quick links. One cable must be installed on each side of the vehicle. Ensure cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring, or other components. The cables are rated at 7,500 lbs each and must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
When not towing, insert the socket plugs into the ends of the tow bar base plate. When ready to tow, install the tow bar mounting tabs instead.

Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle. Note: Base plate safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
