These particular custom 5th wheel brackets offer a custom fit for certain model years of the Dodge Ram 1500 (except extended crew cab) (see application info to verify fitment). Yes. Using a reciprocating saw or cut-off wheel, you must remove the extension attached to the truck box support beams straddling the frame. This allows the frame brackets to mount to the outside of the truck frame. The manual notes this is not a structural part of the truck box and is only used by the manufacturer during assembly.
The bed support has a 3/4" hole that must be enlarged to 7/8" using a die grinder. This enlarged hole is then used to guide drilling of the final 1/2" hole through the bottom of the box support, which is then re-drilled to 9/16" diameter.
1. Position the first mounting rail in the truck bed, centered between weld seams and at the distance shown in the rail location diagram. 2. Mark, center punch, and drill pilot holes (1/8"). 3. Temporarily position the frame bracket outside the frame to verify alignment. 4. Remove the bracket and enlarge pilot holes to final size. 5. Loosely install the frame bracket with straps, collars, bolts, and nuts. 6. Insert the mounting rail by rotating it up on edge, inserting 4" carriage bolts into the rail, placing front bushings over the bolts, and rotating the rail into position. 7. Install 2.5" carriage bolts with U-shaped spacers in the corrugation. 8. Repeat for the second rail. 9. Torque all fasteners to 110 lb-ft.
Front: Use colored (yellow for 1500, white for 2500) tube spacers and front straps. The front spacer strap is required only on 1500 applications. Rear: Use black tube spacers and rear straps. The manual emphasizes using the correct colored bushings and straps in front and black in the rear.
Place the unassembled 5th wheel saddles/slider/goose into the first installed mounting rail. Position the second mounting rail with the saddles/slider/goose by inserting the tabs into the mounting rail and pushing the mounting rail tight towards the first rail. Ensure the second rail is centered between the weld seams on the truck bed floor. If more than one product will be used with the rails, both should be installed at the same time to align the second rail and ensure neither product compromises the fit of the other.
All 1/2" fasteners must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. Torque the mounting rails to the brackets first, then torque the brackets to the frame of the truck.

Place the bushing on a 1/2" drill bit and insert it into the pre-drilled 7/8" hole. Using the bushing as a guide, drill a 1/2" hole through the bottom of the box support. Remove the drill and bushing, then re-drill the 1/2" hole with a 9/16" drill bit.
The 2.5" carriage bolts are installed with U-shaped spacers positioned in the corrugation between the truck box and the mounting rail. This ensures metal-to-metal contact and prevents the mounting rail from moving.
