Yes. The installation requires temporary removal and reinstallation of: front fascia panels, driver-side headlight, windshield washer reservoir, and temperature sensor. The front grille panel, wheel well liner, and bumper cover must also be removed during installation.
Yes. You must drill ten 3/8" holes in the vehicle frame—five on each side. The first hole on each side is drilled using the top center hole in the base plate side panel as a guide (Steps 10-11). Additionally, you must drill a 1/4" hole in the temperature sensor bracket (Step 12).
Yes. Trimming is required in three areas: (1) trim marked areas from the front plastic trim piece using a utility knife (Step 7); (2) cut off the driver-side temperature sensor bracket from the front plastic trim piece with a utility knife (Step 12); and (3) trim the bumper cover where it may interfere with the safety cable loops and attachment tabs (Step 16).
Yes. In Step 8, you must use a hammer to carefully bend the metal frame components inward about 1/8" on each side of the vehicle to accommodate the base plate. This is a permanent modification.
All 3/8" hex bolts (#4) securing the tow bar base plate to the vehicle frame must be torqued to 37 lb-ft. This applies to both the initial center hole installation (Step 10) and the four remaining holes on each side (Step 11).
Position the base plate on the vehicle frame and temporarily clamp it in place, ensuring it is level (Step 9). Using the top center hole in the base plate side panel as a guide, drill a 3/8" hole in the frame on each side and install a 3/8" hex bolt with a nylock nut, torqued to 37 lb-ft (Step 10). Then drill the four remaining holes on each side and install bolts with nylock nuts, also torqued to 37 lb-ft (Step 11). Repeat the process on the other side of the vehicle.
Reinstall the reservoir using the previously removed hardware (three bolts and one nut). For the bottom-most rearward bolt, use the supplied M6 hex bolt (#7) and M6 flat washer (#6) to attach the reservoir through the base plate to the frame; this fastener clamps the base plate between the reservoir and frame (Step 13). Reconnect the fluid hoses and electrical connectors, then refill with windshield washer fluid.
Cut off the driver-side temperature sensor bracket from the front plastic trim piece using a utility knife. Drill a 1/4" hole in the bracket and reinstall it on the upper mounting hole on the driver side of the plastic trim piece so the sensor points forward. Attach the sensor clip and plastic trim piece with the factory push pin for that location, then reinstall the front plastic trim piece on the grille using the remaining factory push pins (Step 12).
When ready to tow, install the tow bar mounting tabs (#2) onto the base plate. When not towing, insert the socket plugs (#9) into the ends of the tow bar base plate to cover the attachment points (Step 16).
Install the permanent safety cables (#3) and quick links (#8), looping them around the vehicle frame and linking them to the tow bar base plate (#1). There must be one cable on each side of the vehicle. Ensure the cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring or other components (Step 15). The cables must be connected to both the base plate and the vehicle frame, and each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
Wear safety glasses at all times during installation. Take care when cutting any plastic or metal, as injury may occur if done improperly. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). When dinghy towing, base plate safety cables must be used at all times and are designed to help prevent complete vehicle separation in the event of a disconnect. Safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
