The CURT 70105 is a tow bar base plate designed for dinghy towing. It is a permanent installation that mounts to the vehicle frame and provides attachment points for a tow bar. The base plate includes safety cables rated at 7,500 lbs each, which must be used at all times when dinghy towing to help prevent complete vehicle separation in the event of a disconnect.
The CURT 70105 is designed for Jeep Cherokee models, with separate installation procedures for TrailHawk and non-TrailHawk variants. The manual does not specify which model years or generations are compatible. Contact CURT at 877.287.8634 or visit curtmfg.com to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle.
Required tools are: torque wrench, drill with 1/2" drill bit, reciprocating saw, sockets (3/4", 7/16", 13mm, 16mm, 17mm, 18mm), wrench (7/16"), nut driver (5/16"), and fishwire (two included). Safety glasses are required at all times during installation.
The kit includes: one tow bar base plate, two spacer plates (1" x 5/8"), two tow bar mounting tabs, two safety cables (7,500 lbs each), two M10 x 1-1/2" hex bolts (CL10.9), two 3/8" conical washers, two 1/2"-13 x 2-1/4" carriage bolts (grade 8), two 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" carriage bolts (grade 8), four 1/4" x 1" x 3" square hole spacers, four 1/2"-13 flange nuts (grade 8), two 1/2" quick links, two socket plugs, and two pieces of fishwire.
Yes. The factory bumper and front underbody panel must be temporarily removed during installation and then reinstalled. The removal procedure differs between TrailHawk and non-TrailHawk models. For TrailHawk models, begin at Step 1. For non-TrailHawk models, begin at Step 4.
The installation difficulty is rated as Moderate. This rating is based on time and effort involved and may vary depending on the installer's level of expertise, the condition of the vehicle, and whether proper tools and equipment are available.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must enlarge the center hole in the frame on each side to accommodate the 1/2"-13 x 1-1/2" carriage bolt head and 1/4" square hole spacer (Step 12), and drill a 1/2" hole in the vehicle frame on each side using the top rearward hole in the side plate as a guide (Step 14). A 1/2" drill bit is included in the required tools.
Yes. The front underbody panel must be trimmed to make space for the safety cable loops and attachment tabs. Each trimmed area will be approximately 1" wide x 6-5/8" long on each side of the vehicle. Use a reciprocating saw for this work. Take care when cutting to prevent injury.
Yes. The drilling of holes in the vehicle frame and trimming of the underbody panel are permanent modifications. The enlarged center hole in the frame and the 1/2" holes drilled in the frame will remain after installation.
All 1/2" fasteners (the 1/2"-13 carriage bolts and 1/2"-13 flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 lb-ft. This applies to the fasteners installed in Steps 15 and 17.
The M10 hex bolts must be torqued to 45 lb-ft. This applies to the M10 x 1-1/2" hex bolts with 3/8" conical washers installed in Step 16.
The installed attachment tabs have a height of 18" and a width of 24".
Each safety cable is rated for 7,500 lbs. Two cables are included, and both must be installed. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
In Step 13, position the tow bar base plate on the vehicle frame and install an M10 hex bolt with 3/8" conical washer in the top, forward-most hole in the side plate. Level the tow bar base plate and snug the hardware, but do not fully tighten. Repeat on the other side. The base plate must remain level when drilling the 1/2" hole in Step 14.
Fishwire is a flexible wire tool used to route fasteners through tight spaces. Two pieces of fishwire are included with the kit. In Step 15, fishwire is used to route a 1/2" x 2-1/4" carriage bolt and 1/4" square hole spacer through the top rearward hole, through the end of the frame, and into the base plate. In Step 17, fishwire is used similarly to route a 1/2" x 1-1/2" carriage bolt and spacer through the bottom hole.
The tow bar mounting tabs should be installed only when ready to tow. When not towing, insert the socket plugs into the ends of the tow bar base plates. This is done in Step 21, after the underbody panel and trim have been reinstalled.
In Step 15, after installing the spacer plate between the base plate and vehicle frame, rotate the spacer plate to make it flush with the base plate before torquing the 1/2" fasteners to 110 lb-ft.
In Step 18, install the permanent safety cables by looping them around the vehicle frame and linking them to the tow bar base plate using quick links. There must be one cable on each side of the vehicle. Make sure the cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring or other components. See the 'Installing the Permanent Base Plate Safety Cables' section for additional guidance on cable routing.
Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). This is a critical safety requirement when using the tow bar.
No. The base plate safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle. Both the base plate safety cables and safety chains must be used when towing.
The safety cables should be used at all times when dinghy towing a vehicle with a tow bar. In the event of a disconnect, the safety cables are designed to help prevent complete vehicle separation.
After installation, periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts. Review your vehicle and trailer manufacturer's owner manuals for specific recommendations, capacities and requirements.
Periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts. The manual does not specify a retorque interval or other maintenance procedures beyond these periodic checks.
