The kit includes: two tow bar base plates (driver and passenger side), two tow bar mounting tabs, two safety cables rated 7,500 lbs each, two hex bolts (M12-1.5 x 40mm), two conical-toothed washers (1/2"), two quick links (1/2"), two socket plugs, two serrated-flange nuts (1/2"-13, grade 5), two square-hole spacers (1/4" x 1" x 3"), two carriage bolts (1/2"-13, 1-1/2", grade 8), and two pieces of fishwire (1/2").
Required tools are: flathead screwdriver, 8mm socket, 18mm socket, 7/16" socket, 3/4" socket, 1/2" drill bit, drill, die grinder with carbide burr, 7/16" wrench, 3/4" wrench, and torque wrench.
Yes. The factory tow hooks must be removed. Use an 18mm socket to remove the two nuts and one bolt securing each tow hook, then remove and set the hooks aside. The factory tow hook hardware is then reused to secure the new base plates.
Yes, on Rebel models. Use an 8mm socket to remove three screws and two push pins from the lower wheel well liner on each side of the vehicle, then remove and set the liners aside. The liners are reinstalled after the base plates are secured.
Yes. Use a 1/2" drill bit to ream out the inner, lower hole in the frame extension as needed on each side of the vehicle. Additionally, some trimming may be required for the baseplate tube to pass through the tow hook opening; use a die grinder to trim the top of the opening as needed.
Some trimming may be required for the baseplate tube to pass through the tow hook opening. Use a die grinder with a carbide burr to trim the top of the opening as needed. Additionally, the lower corner opening on the frame extension may need to be enlarged to accommodate the fishwired carriage bolt and spacer.
The factory tow hook hardware securing the base plates to the frame should be torqued to 58 lb-ft. The rear base plate hardware (carriage bolt and spacer) should be torqued to 110 lb-ft.
Fishwiring is a technique used to thread hardware through confined spaces. For the CURT 70121, you use 1/2" fishwire to thread the 1/2" carriage bolt and square-hole spacer into the rear base plate hole, through the frame extension. This allows the hardware to be installed without removing the frame extension.
Install the permanent safety cables by looping them around the vehicle frame and linking them to the tow bar base plates using quick links. There must be one cable on each side of the vehicle. Ensure the cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring or other components. See the 'Installing the Permanent Base Plate Safety Cables' section for additional guidance.
Install the tow bar mounting tabs (#3) when ready to tow. When not towing, insert the socket plugs (#8) into the ends of the tow bar base plates to protect them.
Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation. Take care when cutting any plastic or metal as injury may occur if done improperly. Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Ensure safety cables do not pinch or interfere with hoses, wiring or other components.
Yes. When dinghy towing a vehicle with the CURT 70121 tow bar, base plate safety cables must be used at all times. In the event of a disconnect, the safety cables are designed to help prevent complete vehicle separation. Two cables must be installed, each rated for at least the gross weight of the towed vehicle. Note that base plate safety cables are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
Each safety cable is rated for 7,500 lbs. Two cables are included and must be installed. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
After installation, periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts. Review your towed vehicle and towing vehicle owner's manuals for specific recommendations, capacities and requirements.
