The CURT 70129 is designed for Jeep Wrangler models including Rubicon (plastic and steel bumper versions), Sport, Sport S, and Overland. Installation procedures vary by model, so verify your specific Wrangler trim before purchasing. The manual does not specify year ranges, so contact CURT at 877-287-8634 to confirm compatibility with your vehicle year.
The kit includes: one tow bar base plate, two tow bar mounting tabs, two safety cables (7,500 lbs. each), two spacer plates, carriage bolts in three sizes (1/2"-13 x 1-3/4", 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2", and 1/2"-13 x 2"), serrated-flange nuts (3/8"-16 and 1/2"-13), two socket plugs, two quick links (1/2"), fishwire (1/2" and 3/8"), and various spacers (round-hole and square-hole in multiple sizes). Socket plugs are inserted when not towing; mounting tabs are installed when ready to tow.
Required tools are: torque wrench, drill, drill bit (1/2"), die grinder with carbide bit, sockets (7/16", 16mm, 18mm), wrenches (7/16", 16mm), large vise grip, and tape. Safety glasses must be worn at all times during installation.
Yes, bumper removal is required for all models. The process varies by trim: Sport, Sport S, and Overland models require removal of the debris guard (two 16mm bolts) and two push pins on the plastic trim. All models require removal of the outer frame brackets (16mm socket) and four nuts on each side (18mm socket) to detach the bumper from the vehicle. Rubicon plastic bumper models also require removal of the small underbody panel bracket (two 16mm bolts). After installation, the bumper is reinstalled.
Yes, temporary removal of the underbody panel is required. The removal method varies by model: Rubicon with plastic bumper requires removal of four bolts (13mm socket); Rubicon with steel bumper requires removal of seven bolts (13mm socket, five toward front and two at back); Sport and Sport S require removal of eight push pins and two bolts (8mm socket); Overland requires removal of nine push pins along the front and two bolts at the rear (8mm socket). The panel is temporarily set aside during installation and reinstalled after trimming.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill two 1/2" holes for the upper rearward fasteners using the base plate as a guide (Step 9). Additionally, the lower center slot in the frame may need to be enlarged on both vehicle sides to allow hardware to pass through (Step 6). The manual also notes that the lower rearward hole may require enlarging for the 1/2" bolt (Step 8). A 1/2" drill bit and die grinder with carbide bit are required tools.
Yes, trimming is required. For Rubicon with plastic bumper models, measure from the middle of the small underbody panel bracket hole to the inside and outside of the base plate mounting plate, then measure to the rearward edge to determine slot length. Trim accordingly and adjust as needed while holding the panel in position. For all other models, hold the underbody panel close to the mounting location, mark, and trim slots. The panel is then reinstalled.
Torque all 3/8" fasteners to 37 ft-lbs. and all 1/2" fasteners to 110 ft-lbs. A torque wrench is required to ensure proper fastener tension. This applies to all carriage bolts and serrated-flange nuts used in the installation.
Each of the two permanent safety cables included with the CURT 70129 has a 7,500 lbs. rating. Both cables must be installed, one on each side of the vehicle. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle. The safety cables are designed to help prevent complete vehicle separation in the event of a disconnect but are not a replacement for safety chains connecting the tow vehicle to the towed vehicle.
The two permanent safety cables must be looped around the vehicle frame and linked to the tow bar base plate using quick links (one cable on each side). Cables must be connected to both the base plate and the vehicle frame. Ensure cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring, or other components. Use the illustrations in the Safety Cable Installation section as a guide. A convenience link is optional.
When not towing, insert the two socket plugs into the end of the tow bar base plate. When ready to tow, install the tow bar mounting tabs instead. The socket plugs protect the base plate when the tow bar is not in use.
After installation, periodically check the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. Do not tow with worn or damaged parts. Review your vehicle and trailer manufacturer's recommendations in their owner's manuals for specific towing capacities and requirements. Never exceed your vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).
The manual recommends periodically checking the condition of all towing equipment. Ensure all fasteners remain tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify a particular inspection interval, so consult your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations or contact CURT at 877-287-8634 for guidance on maintenance schedules.
The installed attachment tabs have a height of 17-1/4" and a width of 24".
The CURT 70129 is designed for Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (plastic and steel bumper), Sport, Sport S, and Overland models. Installation steps vary by trim. Contact CURT at 877-287-8634 to confirm compatibility with your specific year and model.
Torque all 3/8" fasteners to 37 ft-lbs. and all 1/2" fasteners to 110 ft-lbs. A torque wrench is required.
Each of the two permanent safety cables has a 7,500 lbs. rating. Both cables must be installed, one on each side. Each cable must meet or exceed the gross weight of the towed vehicle.
Insert the two socket plugs into the end of the tow bar base plate when not in use. Install the tow bar mounting tabs when ready to tow.
In Step 7, after using the factory 10mm bolts to loosely secure the base plate weldment to the frame, line up the holes in the frame with the base plate and check that the base plate is level. If it is not level, adjust the position before snugging the two 10mm bolts. Once level, proceed with installing the remaining fasteners.
The lower center slot in the frame must be enlarged on both vehicle sides to allow the hardware to pass through (Step 6). Additionally, the lower rearward hole may require enlarging for the 1/2" bolt (Step 8). Use a die grinder with carbide bit or drill to enlarge the slots as needed. The manual notes that the hole may require enlarging, so this is an expected part of the installation process.
Ensure cables do not pinch or interfere with any hoses, wiring, or other components (Step 11). If interference occurs, reposition the cables by adjusting how they loop around the vehicle frame and link to the base plate. The installation guidelines state that cables must be connected to both the base plate and the vehicle frame, so there is flexibility in routing. Verify the cables are secure and do not create any pinch points before completing installation.
