There are several different types of connectors used to supply power from a tow vehicle's electrical system to a trailer's wiring system. Some trailers only need the bare essentials -- running lights, brake lights and turn signals -- while others require a connection for reverse lights, electric brakes and auxiliary power. With connectors ranging from simple to complex, it may be the case that the connection between your vehicle and your trailer is not a perfect match. For example, your truck may be equipped with a 6-way round socket, but your trailer may have a 4-way flat plug. For this very common problem, CURT offers a quick and simple solution in the form of an electrical adapter. An adapter is an electrical device that allows a connection to be made between a mismatched trailer plug and vehicle socket. It easily plugs in your vehicle's electrical socket and usually requires no additional wiring. CURT offers an array of adapters to accommodate most types of plugs and sockets, including 4-way flat, 4-way round, 5-way flat, 6-way round, 7-way RV blades and more. This special electrical adapter is actually designed to adapt a 4-way flat vehicle socket to fit multiple trailer plugs, including a 4-way flat and a 7-way RV blade. Some manual wiring is required. This multipurpose socket also comes with its own backup alarm, dust covers, a mounting bracket and all necessary mounting hardware for a complete installation. Yes. Your vehicle must be equipped with a 4-way flat trailer connector. If your vehicle does not have one, you will need to install a custom wiring harness or other 4-way flat trailer connector before installing this adapter.
Single output adapters (part numbers 57184, 57183, 57185, 57626, 57676) convert a 4-way flat connector to either a 6-way round or 7-way RV blade connector. Dual output adapters (part numbers 57604, 57624, 57672, 57674, 57102) provide both a 4-way flat output and either a 6-way round or 7-way RV blade output simultaneously, allowing you to use two different trailer connectors.
Part numbers 57185, 57626, 57676, 57604, 57624, 57672, 57674, and 57102 include a mounting bracket. Part numbers 57184 and 57183 do not include a mounting bracket.
You will need: 1/8" drill bit, drill, Phillips screwdriver, wire stripper, cutting tool, terminal crimpers, and test light. You will also need three self-tapping screws, #10 - 1/2" (not included with the product).
Yes. You will need to purchase three self-tapping screws, #10 - 1/2", which are not included with the product. These are used to secure the mounting bracket and attach the grounding wire.
Yes. You must drill two 1/8" holes: one for the grounding point on a suitable surface near the tow vehicle, and one or more for mounting the bracket to the bumper or other suitable mounting surface. Before drilling, you must check for brake lines, fuel lines, wiring and other components that could be damaged.
You need a 1/8" drill bit. This size is used for both the grounding point hole and the mounting bracket holes.
Yellow wire = Auxiliary or back-up lights. Blue wire = Electric brakes. Black wire = Positive power (+) with appropriate inline fuse. White wire = Ground connection (required for proper operation).
Use 12 gauge (minimum) wire for all connections. Connect the wires using butt-connectors.
No. The white wire on the vehicle's 4-way flat connector will not support the ground (-) functions of the combination harness's 4-way flat and 6- or 7-way connector. You must drill a separate 1/8" grounding hole and attach the combination harness's white wire with a ring terminal using a #10 - 1/2" self-tapping screw.
Failing to properly ground the product can cause loss of warranty, overheating and potential fire. The white wire on the vehicle's 4-way flat connector cannot support the ground functions of the adapter, so a dedicated ground connection is required for the harness to work properly.
Mount the combination harness in an area that is within reach of the trailer's wiring harness and near the center of the vehicle. The mounting bracket should be attached to the vehicle's bumper or other suitable surface. Do not attach the bracket directly to the hitch.
Feed the entire harness through the large mounting hole in the bracket and position the connector against the face of the mounting bracket. Using the supplied mounting hardware, attach the connector to the bracket.
Slide the 4-way flat connector into the side mounting slot until the connector is secured in place.
Plug the combination harness's trailer-style 4-way flat connector into the tow vehicle's 4-way flat connector. This connection provides the tail lights, stop lights and turn signal functions. Confirm proper function with a test light or by using a properly functioning trailer. Secure any loose wires using cable ties or equivalent product.
Do not exceed the product rating or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
No. Never attach the mounting bracket directly to the hitch by cutting, welding or drilling into the hitch. The bracket must be attached to the vehicle's bumper or other suitable surface.
Before drilling, you must check for brake lines, fuel lines, wiring and other components that may be hidden behind or under the surface. Drilling into these components can cause damage and personal injury.
The area must be clean of any dirt, debris or undercoating before drilling the 1/8" grounding hole.
Confirm proper function with a test light or by using a properly functioning trailer. This verifies that all wiring connections are correct and the adapter is working properly.
Part 57102 fits vehicles with a 4-way flat trailer connector. It provides dual outputs: a 4-way flat and a 7-way RV blade connector. If your vehicle lacks a 4-way flat connector, you'll need a custom harness first.
