The CURT RockerBall trailer ball is a cushion hitch ball that dynamically absorbs jerking and jarring from your trailer at the coupling point. Just bolt it onto your existing trailer hitch ball mount to enjoy increased comfort, enhanced control and extended longevity of your vehicle's systems. The RockerBall tow ball is engineered with ShockDrop technology: a cushion isolator that reduces noise, vibrations and chucking at the coupling point. This produces quieter towing, increased driver control over the trailer and reduced strain on the vehicle's brakes, towing system and suspension, compared to a conventional metal-on-metal towing connection. The RockerBall fits onto a variety of standard ball mounts -- virtually any ball mount with a 3-inch wide trailer ball tongue and 1-1/4-inch diameter ball hole. RockerBall is also virtually maintenance-free. Unlike other cushion hitch and torsion hitch options, it has no airbags or bearings to service. Just apply grease to the zerk fitting as needed for continuous lubrication and smooth towing. The RockerBall trailer ball is constructed from forged steel for exceptional strength, and it comes with a powder coat finish and chrome plating for dependable corrosion resistance. Note: This trailer ball comes with retail packaging.

The CURT 40249 is rated for a gross trailer weight (GTW) of 12,000 lbs and tongue weight (TW) of 1,200 lbs. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The trailer ball ratings represent the product's capability only, not the capacity of your entire towing system. Always verify that all components of your towing system—including the vehicle, hitch, and ball mount—meet or exceed your trailer's weight requirements.
The CURT 40249 includes: (1) trailer ball assembly, (1) anti-rotation base plate, (1) lock washer 1-1/4", and (1) hex nut 1-1/4". The ball mount is sold separately and must be purchased independently.
No. The CURT 40249 trailer ball assembly is sold without a ball mount. You must purchase a compatible ball mount separately. The ball mount must have a flat mounting surface for proper installation.
The manual does not specify the ball size (e.g., 1-7/8", 2", or 2-5/16"). Before purchasing, verify that the trailer ball size matches your trailer coupler. If the sizes do not match, the trailer could become uncoupled. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 or check the product specifications on CURTMFG.COM to confirm the ball size.
The trailer ball shank diameter must correspond with the ball mount hole size. Before installation, verify that the shank diameter matches your ball mount's hole size. If they do not match, the assembly cannot be properly secured. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 if you are unsure of your ball mount's hole size.
You need a torque wrench and socket. The torque wrench is essential because the hex nut must be tightened to exactly 450 ft-lbs. Failure to use the correct torque can result in serious injury or death.
The manual does not specify whether the ball mount must be removed from the vehicle during installation. However, the installation steps describe placing the anti-rotation base plate and lock washer over the trailer ball shank and securing with the hex nut. For clarity on whether removal is necessary for your specific setup, contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634.
Installation has three steps: (1) Place the anti-rotation base plate over the trailer ball shank, ensuring the ball articulation is in the same direction as vehicle travel. Place the lock washer over the shank and secure with the hex nut. (2) Tighten the hex nut to 450 ft-lbs using a torque wrench. The threaded shank must extend beyond the nut when tightened. (3) Grease the assembly using the grease zerk on the bottom of the shank with high-quality molybdenum-based grease before initial use.
The anti-rotation base plate must be oriented so that the trailer ball articulation is in the same direction as vehicle travel. The base plate tabs must fit freely over the width of the ball mount tongue. The orientation shown in the manual diagram is the only correct orientation. Using the anti-rotation base plate in any other orientation can result in serious injury or death.
The 1-1/4" hex nut must be tightened to 450 ft-lbs using a torque wrench. The threaded shank must extend beyond the nut when tightened. Failure to tighten to this specification can result in serious injury or death.
Grease the trailer ball assembly before initial use and then once every 3 months or 3,000 miles of use, whichever comes first. Use a high-quality molybdenum-based grease applied through the grease zerk located on the bottom of the RockerBall shank. The assembly is adequately lubricated when grease can be seen in the marked areas. Failure to grease the assembly may lead to failure and can result in serious injury or death.
Use a high-quality molybdenum-based grease. The manual does not specify a particular brand or product. Apply grease through the grease zerk located on the bottom of the RockerBall shank.
Before every use, verify that the snap ring on the pivot pin of the trailer ball assembly is in place and properly seated. If the snap ring is missing or the trailer ball pin has backed partially out of the assembly, immediately discontinue product use. A missing or improperly seated snap ring is a serious safety hazard.
If the ball is able to move with minimal force by hand more than five degrees from the vertical position, the product must be replaced immediately. A heavily worn or damaged trailer ball assembly may result in the trailer becoming separated from the vehicle. Do not use the product in this condition. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 if you have questions.
Ensure that the safety chains operate freely around the trailer ball system and do not become entangled in the trailer ball system. Check this before every tow to prevent entanglement, which could create a safety hazard.
No. Use of any pin other than what is provided by the manufacturer could be a serious safety hazard and will void the warranty. Always use only the manufacturer-provided pin.
After installation, verify that: (1) the hex nut is tightened to 450 ft-lbs and the threaded shank extends beyond the nut; (2) the anti-rotation base plate is oriented correctly with the ball articulation in the same direction as vehicle travel; (3) the anti-rotation base plate tabs fit freely over the ball mount tongue width; (4) the snap ring on the pivot pin is in place and properly seated; and (5) the assembly has been greased before initial use.
Yes. Periodically check the hex nut and ensure it is tightened to the correct torque specification of 450 ft-lbs. Over time, vibration and use may cause the nut to loosen, which could compromise safety.
No, the ball mount is sold separately. The CURT 40249 includes only the trailer ball assembly, anti-rotation base plate, lock washer, and hex nut.
You need a torque wrench and socket to tighten the hex nut to 450 ft-lbs.
Tighten the 1-1/4" hex nut to 450 ft-lbs. The threaded shank must extend beyond the nut when tightened.
Grease before initial use and then once every 3 months or 3,000 miles of use with high-quality molybdenum-based grease applied through the grease zerk on the bottom of the shank.
Verify that the snap ring on the pivot pin is in place and properly seated. If it is missing or the pin has backed out, discontinue use immediately.
The CURT 40249 is rated for a gross trailer weight of 12,000 lbs and tongue weight of 1,200 lbs, but never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
This indicates the trailer ball assembly is worn or damaged and must be replaced immediately. Do not use the product. A heavily worn or damaged trailer ball assembly may result in the trailer becoming separated from the vehicle. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 for a replacement.
Immediately discontinue product use. A missing snap ring or a partially backed-out pin is a serious safety hazard. Do not tow with the trailer. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 for a replacement assembly.
Verify that the nut is tightened to the correct torque specification of 450 ft-lbs using a torque wrench. Periodically check the nut and re-tighten if necessary. If the nut continues to loosen despite proper torque, the threads or nut may be damaged. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634.
