Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. Yes. You must drill holes through the truck bed floor. First, use a center punch to mark hole locations based on the illustration on page 3, then drill each position with a 1/8" drill bit. After verifying alignment with the frame brackets, enlarge these holes to 9/16". The manual advises: 'When drilling holes through the bed be sure what is below the truck bed in those locations.'
According to the diagram on page 3, the bolt locations are 24-13/16" from the back edge of the truck bed and 46-3/4" apart (typical of both sides). These measurements apply to both 5.5' and 6.5' truck beds. Use a measuring tape and center punch to mark these positions before drilling.
Temporarily position the frame brackets on the sides of the frame, aligning the center hole in the bracket with the existing slot in the truck frame. The brackets must be tilted in at a 45° angle to clear the leading edge of the bed hem seam, then laid flat against the frame rail. Verify that the 1/8" drilled holes align with the slots in the frame brackets before proceeding.
Use the 3.5" x 1.5" block (Item 7) as a spacer behind the bracket. The U-bolt passes through the bottom hole, and the block sits between the bracket and the frame rail to ensure proper spacing and metal-to-metal contact.
Thread the supplied pull wire onto the supplied carriage bolt (Item 8), followed by the 1" x 3" block (Item 9). Pull both components through the center slot on the frame, ensuring the 1.5" x 2" block is placed between the frame and the frame bracket. Place the conical washer (Item 5) on the bolt and secure with a nut (Item 4). The pull wire must be used on both sides. Hand tighten initially; final torque specification is not provided in the manual.
Use U-shaped blocks between the frame bracket or mounting rails and the truck bed to ensure metal-to-metal contact. When installing the center bolt, use the 1" x 2" block (Item 10) on the bottom side of the bed floor.
Place the unassembled 5th wheel support arches/slider/goose into the already installed mounting rail. Position the rearward mounting rail by inserting the tabs into the mounting rail and pushing the mounting rail tight towards the other mounting rail. Ensure that the mounting rail is centered on the bed of the vehicle. If more than one hitch product will be used with the mounting rails, both types should be used at the same time to align the mounting rails properly.
Torque the 1/2" Grade 8 bolts to 110 ft-lbs (149 N·m).
Torque the 1/2" U-bolts to 75 ft-lbs (101 N·m).
